mattdivo Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I'm in need of a new (and larger) humidor. I have my eye set on this model that claims to store 250 cigars, which would be a perfect size for me. How accurate are these cigar counts claimed by the manufacturer? Do they use the smallest vitola as a benchmark, or can I actually expect to fit this many larger cigars? I'm opting for the digital hygrometer - aything else important to consider for a new humidor? Tx!
Lotusguy Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 It will hold far less than 250 "real" cigars, especially since you will want a little bit of air around them and you want to have access. My guess would be about 150 cigars, significantly less if you like 60 ring gauge monsters. I am assuming you aren't storing boxes in it, BTW.
TWalker Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I was in a similar position but just yesterday ended up with a 45 liter cooler for $35. It easily holds all my cigars (at least for now), is almost airtight and holds at 65% no problem. Very stable environment.
CigarB Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I would say you'll get about half the storage space as advertised. I think I read somewhere that what they advertise is based on the corona size packed in like sardines.
riazp Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 as mentioned you'll be able to fit about 150 if your lucky depending on vitola sizes. YES you want a digital hygrometer for sure. I started off with these desktop type humidors then went the cooler route...30$ for a cooler, some 65% RH beads, and voila, a perfect vehicle to store your boxes. I store my singles in empty cigar boxes as well.
hdryder Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I bought a 250ct about a year ago and I thought that would be perfect but in all honesty it holds about half of that. I have since bought a wine cooler & have a cabinet ordered.
riazp Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 funny to see how we all start with these desktops and the quickly evolve to larger storage options as a coller, wine fridge, cabinet, ect
rckymtn22 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I am about to add another blue 48qt cooler to my collection. Going to pickup one from Walmart for $26. Add some beads and a hygrometer you get a pretty good setup for cheap.
kcheek Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Get a cooler and don't look back. Fill it with empty boxes and replace them with full ones over time. Coolers that are set up right are very stable and great for keeping your smokes with room to grow.
Hemsworth Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I actually have both a giant cooler and a nice big desktop. I keep my boxes in the cooler out of site and I smoke out of my humidor. It's a beautiful piece in the livingroom and I love the aroma when I open it up. I think that it adds to the experience of smoking...the freshly poured glass of scotch sitting on the table beside it as you choose the accompanying smoke...the two aromas wafting up...man, I need a scotch.
mikec Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I have a large floor standing cabinet and two or three smaller desktops. When times are good the cabinet and the desk top are full. Most of the time I have a desk top or two filled. Building a small (closet sized) walk in this summer.
maverickdrinker Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 another vote for a cooler. i dont even store in boxes anymore for regular production stuff. a ziplock and write the box code to increase the storage space.
Scdalak Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 funny to see how we all start with these desktops and the quickly evolve to larger storage options as a coller, wine fridge, cabinet, ect Aint that the truth!!!
Chunks96ss Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I have 2 desktops but I'm also thinking of a cooler, seems inexpensive and it's lots of room
Murri Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 funny to see how we all start with these desktops and the quickly evolve to larger storage options as a coller, wine fridge, cabinet, ect Same here. Need lots of room as the collection builds up. Long term aging seems to need it's own space.
sblevit Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 However big you think it should be, get it 10x larger and then you might be in good shape.
SurpriseMVP Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 However big you think it should be, get it 10x larger and then you might be in good shape. this x2. You can never have enough storage. I'm almost at capacity again. Since this photo I added a few more boxes

SurpriseMVP Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Are those thermo electric or compressor? Thermo electric. Have 2 pounds of beads in the top and 1 pound on the bottom. I service the beads around 4 times a year and thats it.
