I'm in need of a new (and larger) humidor. I have my eye set on this model that claims to store 250 cigars, which would be a perfect size for me.

How accurate are these cigar counts claimed by the manufacturer? Do they use the smallest vitola as a benchmark, or can I actually expect to fit this many larger cigars?

I'm opting for the digital hygrometer - aything else important to consider for a new humidor?

Tx!

It will hold far less than 250 "real" cigars, especially since you will want a little bit of air around them and you want to have access.

My guess would be about 150 cigars, significantly less if you like 60 ring gauge monsters.

I am assuming you aren't storing boxes in it, BTW.

I was in a similar position but just yesterday ended up with a 45 liter cooler for $35. It easily holds all my cigars (at least for now), is almost airtight and holds at 65% no problem. Very stable environment.

I would say you'll get about half the storage space as advertised. I think I read somewhere that what they advertise is based on the corona size packed in like sardines.

as mentioned you'll be able to fit about 150 if your lucky depending on vitola sizes. YES you want a digital hygrometer for sure. I started off with these desktop type humidors then went the cooler route...30$ for a cooler, some 65% RH beads, and voila, a perfect vehicle to store your boxes. I store my singles in empty cigar boxes as well.

I bought a 250ct about a year ago and I thought that would be perfect but in all honesty it holds about half of that. I have since bought a wine cooler & have a cabinet ordered.

funny to see how we all start with these desktops and the quickly evolve to larger storage options as a coller, wine fridge, cabinet, ect

I am about to add another blue 48qt cooler to my collection. Going to pickup one from Walmart for $26. Add some beads and a hygrometer you get a pretty good setup for cheap.

Get a cooler and don't look back. Fill it with empty boxes and replace them with full ones over time. Coolers that are set up right are very stable and great for keeping your smokes with room to grow.

I actually have both a giant cooler and a nice big desktop. I keep my boxes in the cooler out of site and I smoke out of my humidor. It's a beautiful piece in the livingroom and I love the aroma when I open it up. I think that it adds to the experience of smoking...the freshly poured glass of scotch sitting on the table beside it as you choose the accompanying smoke...the two aromas wafting up...man, I need a scotch.

I have a large floor standing cabinet and two or three smaller desktops. When times are good the cabinet and the desk top are full. Most of the time I have a desk top or two filled. Building a small (closet sized) walk in this summer.

Same here.

Need lots of room as the collection builds up.

Long term aging seems to need it's own space.

However big you think it should be, get it 10x larger and then you might be in good shape.

this x2. You can never have enough storage. I'm almost at capacity again. Since this photo I added a few more boxes

Thermo electric. Have 2 pounds of beads in the top and 1 pound on the bottom. I service the beads around 4 times a year and thats it.

Wow. I have a compressor model cooler and I have to recharge my beads about every 4 or 5 weeks.
