Ryan Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 It's a terrible story. Goes to show how 4 ounces of rum can f up your life. I can remember a time when 6 beers was my driving limit. That seems like another life now. Then again there are stories like this http://www.irishexam...des-179244.html just today. It's not always simple. I know friends of Jose Lugo-Alonso, they won't be happy to hear this.
cgarner Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 DWI is a serious issue. On my drive back on from Christmas my wife and I were delayed 2 hrs due to a serious wreck caused by a drunk driver. 3 dead, 1 serious condition. The drunk driver killed herself, but it's unfortunate she took 2 innocent people with her, and devastated another person and her family.
CanuckSARTech Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 Oh man. Effing hell. I had no idea what was going on with that. I've had the chance to meet with, and correspond fairly regularly with Jose Lugo. A nice guy, very amicable, always ready to help, with a true passion for cigars and all things Cuba. He in the past has gifted me a number of nice Habanos branded specific items, like that little chromed Habanos cigar-box hammer that I've posted on here before. He's always been a go-to source that I've used for Habanos stuff coming through the pipeline, especially for Canada-specific things; I've been wondering why I haven't been able to get much communication with him lately. I mean, it's incredibly fortunate that he didn't actually kill anyone. And he does deserve something, as he's now completely altered someone else's life. DUI is incredibly serious, and needs to be dealt with accordingly. But the thing that almost took my breath away is not even the jail time. It's that he'll now be DEPORTED back to Cuba afterwards. Completely life altering for him, and his whole family now. A shame for all involved.
Rushman Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 Very sad on both sides. One of the many reasons I enjoy my slower life in playa del carmen.....I had one or two too many Havana Clubs two nights ago and simply walked the 10 blocks from La Bodequita del Medio to home. --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=20.631666,-87.070592
cigcars Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 *My cousin was killed by a drunk driver back in 1991 on the outskirts of Tennessee. She was only 34 and very popular. She's interred in Franklin, KY and it was one of the largest funerals that small city had to date. Nothing to take lightly, obviously, when it comes to "one too many."
Diamondog Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Gov't far too leniant on impaired driving. It's infuriating. Happens everyday all day. Get these drivers off the road period, throw the book at the every single time. A little bit over the limit or a lot over the limit hammer them every single time. Need to get the mindset in drivers that if they blow over they will be punished severly each and every single time...
Squarehead Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Diamondog,it's not the govn't,the law is there. In my opinion it's the lawyers who twisting the words around and the judges which don't have the gutts to bring down the law as it is written.I always hear"He was such a good boy"and had a very bad childhood.Hell, on that account I would or could be the worst criminal on the planet.
rfenst Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Here in Orlando, Florida, the pre-trial offer would have been 7-8 years in prison. If rejected and he were to lose at trial, he would get about 15 years. He's very lucky that he got such a light sentence. What is more bothersome to me was that the judge specifically distinguished between the victim being injured, but not killed. What the hell does that have to do with anything? It is the horribly wrongful act of DWI causing injury that matters. The drunk driver benefits because he was extraordinarily lucky he didn't kill the victim? Pathetic.
