ezruss Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Is it just me as a new Cuban cigar smoker, but why are there so few maduro Cuban cigars out there?
aes8 Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Maduro wrappers are a ploy by NC manufactures to impart some type of flavor into simple and shallow nicotine bombs, but that is just my humble opinon.
cigcars Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Cuba didn't manufacture maduro cigars until very recently - around 2006? Correct me, folks. They are offered NOW. But I prefer their regular stock. The Cohiba maduros have zero flavor to me, I'm afraid.
dicko Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 No idea. Would be interested to hear though. I prefer a lighter wrapper for what its worth.
Guest rob Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 In a recent thread, there were YouTube videos of Hamlet. In one of those videos (or a link from one of them) Hamlet said that in his opinion Maduro wrappers did impart a distinct flavour to the cigar. I believe he said that it accounted for 10 to 15 percent of the flavour.
nubchin Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Try this , pick two cheap sticks, unwrap the wrapper 1/3 off of one of them , smoke both the same time , if you notice a flavor change when burning the wrapper part , thats the amount the wrapper affects the flavor . Not the 80-90% the NC manufacturers cry out to be . Its the blend including the what ever wrapper that counts in flavor , not the color of the wrapper . 60 ring jet black sticks are just another marketing gimmick in the notion that NC smokers tend to like darker bigger sticks IMHO . Also , I have been to Tuxtla and San Andres Veracruz but never seen a black colored tobacco any were which is sold widely by NCs , I wounder how the hell do they get so black in the process , sun-grown tobacco are darker but not black .

Colt45 Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 No idea why they don't don't produce more, but I'm glad that's the case. True maduro is a curing process - not a color (but it is a term also used for color grading). I'm one who feels the wrapper has major impact on overall flavor.

I respect Hamlet, and think he's a great guy...but completely disagree. I've had a few cigars that i've taken the wrapper leaf off completely, and it COMPLETELY changed the taste. Not 10-15% - more like 60-70%.
Rushman Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Maduro wrappers are a ploy by NC manufactures to impart some type of flavor into simple and shallow nicotine bombs, but that is just my humble opinon. x2.....for what its worth, when i first entered the cigar world, my view was a bit narrow in scope (in terms of NC marcas) so I gravitated towards maduros in search of more flavor. Once I started smoking CC's (dont believe there were any maduros coming out of cuba 6-7 years ago) I found the flavor in a colorado wrapper.
docbp87 Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 While I am not a big fan of super dark wrappers on CCs, and don't love the Cohiba Maduros, I think there is maybe just a touch of extreme prejudice being expressed in this thread. There are no absolutes, and I think that some of the harsh generalizations made above (while certainly applicable in many cases) are just that... maybe a little too harsh, and are being applied too generally. Sure, Rocky Patel, with his dyed, jet black, dipped in molasses and paint wrappers are crap... but the Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrappers that are used by Fuente on the Anejo and Hemingway Maduros, and the CBLM used by Pepin on Tatuaje cigars, and on Jaime's cigars are examples of Maduro done well. Just as all CC's aren't made with underfermented tobacco that is too tightly rolled, not all maduro NC's are 60 ring monsters with fake dyed wrappers.
Guest rob Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Colt or Fuzz are best at finding old links... but about 4 years ago El Prez did an experiment where he had 2 Monte 2's and removed the wrapper from one to determine what effect wrapper has on flavour. I don't have the time but I recommend seeking it out.

I'm not posting links as they are easy to find, and there are a few other pertinent discussions there - The Yasmel series, for example. I did my own little experiment a few months back. If anyones's interested, here's a link: Link
Michel1968 Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Maduro kills lots of subtle aromas. I'd rather see shiny lighter (colorado or rosado) wrappers. I do too think that a wrappers has far more influence than the suggested 10%. That would make the remaining 90% flavor consistent. C'mon...
aes8 Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 I think there is maybe just a touch of extreme prejudice being expressed in this thread. Just a touch?? Although I love nothing more than to stir the pot with my posts I do feel that this is mostly a marketing ploy. When I started smoking NC back in the day I only wanted to smoke Dominican Maduro Churchills. Since I've come over to the dark side of CC I'm now hording Claro Coronas and long pantelas.
