CaptainQuintero Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Decided to revisit this sublime cigar after a few months in my humidor, my last review got an honest to God 96/100 and convinced my to buy a box the next day. At the time they had been at a rough and ready wine store and were easily over 70%RH. Now they have settled over the course of a few months down to 65RH let's light one up! May '11 (although actually they have been sitting in cuba for a year due to problems with the SLB ink colour so May '10) 4 x 50 Fantastic and dark oily wrapper, the aroma is incredibly rich, damp forest with strong sweet tobacco. Like Ken said in one of the vid reviews I just want to lick the feet of these things. The best aroma I have ever smelt from a box or single cigar, I wish I could bottle that smell. I've started getting into lighting with matches recently, the cigars seem to behave much better and generally perform better than with a torch. The first puff is that mulchy damp forest and a creamy aftertaste, the second puff I can only describe as someone stuffing a bunch of ripe red grapes into your mouth then punching you in the teeth. A huge explosion of sugar sweetness and fruit and then an immediate gush of thick, silky cream coating the whole of your mouth. This is something special, the last one of these was a 96 and this is right away elbowing that poor cigar in the face to try and get ahead of it. This is so sweet it is like these have been grown on trees in the Summer Sun and left to ripen then picked and given straight to me, I've never experienced something so sweet and lush but with zero sickly or chemically after taste. Getting into the middle of this stick now and it's turning. The guy from the first third has come back but this time he's dunked his other hand in a vanilla cheesecake, oh **** here comes another right hook! BLAM! I'm just sat there, nose running, a vacant expression on my face with splatters of rich creamy cheesecake and chunks of crushed grapes dribbing down my chin, sweet silky smoke drifting up out of my ears. I've only just recovered from the first two thirds and settling down nicely into a bissful stupor, eyes glazed over and the Sun on my face when that sneaky guy comes up from behind with a serving of bread and butter pudding in each hand and proceeds to slap me round the head with one hand then stuffs the contents of his other up my nose. Jesues I don't think I can cope with much more, then I realise he's standing infront of me, a knowing grin on his face and a stirrup-pump full of sugar water in his hands. I don't even want to know where he intends to put the nozzle... I don't think it's fair to rate this cigar, but it beats the 96/100 of the last one. Both have been the best smokes I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy. I went out and spent the last of my yearly budget by picking up two more boxes of these amazing cigars the next day. Talking to the guys in the shop and looking around other stores it seems the stocks of these are nearly gone. I only hope that they are brought into regular production soon and at the same level of sublime excellence that this run has been. Not one single negative in any aspect of these cigars, 5 hours later and my mouth is still salivating from the sweetness. ---------- One piece of advice would be to not drink anything with these, the cigar causes copious amount of mouth watering and zero harshness in the mouth and the flavours just build up and build up with each puff. I'd say water would be the only thing to drink with them if you need something so the sweetness of the cigar is not compromised. I had a light ale with one of these a few weeks ago and spoilt the whole experience. These things are so delicate you don't want to trash the flavours. Another tip is whenever you ash this stick, every one of the above flavours comes powering back in, fresh and juicy like you just pressed the rewind button
riazp Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 man you've sold me on this CQ, i've been thinking about it for a while due to its step price, but looks like I just might have to spend a bit and get it.
cigcars Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 The La Flor De Cano is already a very tasty smoke in itself anyway...I can't wait to acquire one of these specialty releases and try it myself!
cottierm Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Thank you for this very appetizing review which left me salivating on my keyboard! I think that you owe me one for all the mess you have caused on my office computer!!! mazolaman Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 Nice review El Capitan. I passed on one of these,as I dismissed it as being too small, maybe a mistake...
Pilgrims Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 good review...I've had two of them with mixed reviews one great and one far less so but that could have been my mood or taste buds/timing etc...defo something to try if you haven't and I'm tempted to get a box but I wonder how often I would pick them over a few of the Robusto's for the flavour profile/gauge or Partagas Short/Reyes for the timeframe...
CaptainQuintero Posted October 18, 2011 Author Posted October 18, 2011 Whatever I smoke I find it normally takes about an hour (Apart from Churchills/DCs) so the size hasn't been an issue for me, burn time was over an hour each time I've had one. Maybe I'm just a slow smoker
