NicPac Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 Recently I loaded up my new aristcrat and tonight I was looking threw some of my collection and found a box with several beetles crawling in it! I freaked out and started searching boxes only to find a couple other boxes with them! Never had this problem in the handful of years I've been collecting....WHAT DO I DO??? I removed all boxes with signs of the and threw them in my freezer as its the only this I can remember reading to do...pleaseeee help!
AlohaStyle Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 Dam that sucks man. How many boxes do you have? I hate to say it, but I would consider freezing everything just to be safe... for sure the boxes surrounding the affected ones. Not much of anything else you can do about it.
NicPac Posted October 12, 2011 Author Posted October 12, 2011 40 or 50, plus around 600 singles....freeze everything then what? How long should I freeze them? Then what after that? , freaking out, franticly searching everything...
gigabyte056 Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 You came to the right place, Please follow the link to a post made regarding the best way to freeze cigars and the proper process. Freezing process
NicPac Posted October 12, 2011 Author Posted October 12, 2011 Thanks for the link! Do I need to put allthe boxes in plastic bags? All the pics I have found the beetles are brown, what I found are very very small white, almost clear bugs?
Ryan Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 Thanks for the link! Do I need to put allthe boxes in plastic bags? All the pics I have found the beetles are brown, what I found are very very small white, almost clear bugs? Long time since I posted here or many other places, things have been nuts for me. Sounds like what you have are wood mites, not beetles, actually it sounded like wood mites from the first post. Are they about "grain of salt" size? They won't damage your cigars, at least not noticably but very annoying things all the same. Freezing won't do it as they'll be in the humidor and humidifier, they seem to like moisture. Do a search here for "wood mites" and you'll find quite a bit of info.
NicPac Posted October 12, 2011 Author Posted October 12, 2011 Yes, grain of salt size. I have never had this problem every before. So these prob came with my new cab? So should I take all my cigars out of my freezer? Haha I took out most of my freezer food to make room for the cigars! Haha
Ryan Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 Yes, grain of salt size. I have never had this problem every before. So these prob came with my new cab? So should I take all my cigars out of my freezer? Haha I took out most of my freezer food to make room for the cigars! Haha They can be a pain in the arse to get rid of. Other people might have better ideas, but this is what I think I would do. Put every box you have into separate ziplock bags, this will prevent spread. Check all your singles well and bag them too. Empty out you Aristocrat, whatever humidifer you have, dump any moisture retaining elements and replace. Vacuum the inside of the humidor well, with a crevice tool/attachment if you have one and leave empty and open for a few days if you can, then vacuum again, you'll need to re-season the humidor. Check every box you have for dust mites, every cigar. If you find them in a box brush them off every cigar, bag them, then blow out the inside of the box with a hair dryer, preferably outside, then give it a good wipe inside with kitchen roll. Put the cigars back in the box then ziplock it before placing back in the humidor. Hopefully that will get rid of them. There's no harm keeping your boxes/singles in ziplocks in the humidor, they are permeable to moisture but not mites. Sounds like quite a bit of work and it is. Others may have better/easier solutions but I've been through it and I know what a pain they can be. Good luck!
NicPac Posted October 12, 2011 Author Posted October 12, 2011 Thank a bunch for the help. Looks like I got a nice project for tomorrow. I sure am glad it sounds like I have wood mites, not beetles. What a pain in the arse tho! Thanks again!!!
BlueClaw Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 as a temporary solution while your humidor is drying out and being vaccumed you can get one or two of those plastic containers that can also be used to store cigars in.. (cooler dors for cigars). it wouldn't be infected and you can set it up as something until you straighten out your primary humidor. wanna make sure all them buggers are out of there.. GL .
kmagurk Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 a long time ago I thought I had beetle's to, but it turned out to be wood mites like Ryan said. i had already froze my cigars when I found out what they were, it didn't seem to hurt the taste
NicPac Posted October 12, 2011 Author Posted October 12, 2011 Yeah I am setting up my old coolerdor up for storage until my cab drys out....what a pain! Sure happy it's not beetles tho!
