Hash Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Hello All, As you all probably know there are a number of new cigar releases,e.g Limitada,or additions to existing cigars. What i would like to ask is there a real difference in taste and quality to justify the higher prices or is it a marketing gimmick.
Stalebread Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Oh my. Some smokers see it one way. Other smokers see it differently. There are a bunch of threads here that deal with your question in one way or another. I see it is a marketing "gimmick" but that does not mean that the category of cigars you are referring to are not good. Or at least some of them. Personally, I've found some ELs and regionals to be very good and worth what I spent on them (like the '05 RA Belicoso, UK regional). As for this year's releases, I'll try some and ignore others. I guess ultimately you have to take a risk, shell out some cash, try some and make up your own mind. You can always read early reviews before deciding to make a purchase or not.

Colt45 Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 I guess one thing is to try and figure out if there is any difference in tobaccos used for a special release. For example Gran Reservas use five year aged tobaccos. ELs use (or did use) an aged wrapper. Otherwise, I consider REs / ELs simply as sizes not normally found in the line. Some enjoy this aspect and look forward to new releases. I don't personally feel that you are necessarily getting higher quality than regular production, but I would expect good quality. I think that value or whether the price premium is worth it is subjective.
randomhero1090 Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 The newest releases have peaked my interest because of the sizes... RA Allones Extra EL, PSE2 and PSD5 are cigars I have my eye on. I've only had a few ELs/REs. Only the 06 Cohiba Pirámides EL really rocked my world. It is very hard to justify the cost IMHO. Just wish I could TRY them before I drop a couple hundred on a box.
cigcars Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 I managed some time back to get hold of those fat corona gorda/churchill size UK Regionals: the Juan Lopez, Por Larranaga, Punch, etc. that had zero flavor and aroma. It was as if it was all size and totally underfilled, and this was from a reputable habana house dealer. The ones that are of average pyramide, belicoso, or short robusto size releases have much more going for them. Apart from that the regular production habanos are just fine...I have been educated by Piggy!
