I watched this the other evening, having heard rave reviews about it when it came out.

One of those films that the critics love, but doesn't do that well at the box office.

Classic Scandanavian mood piece.

A young lad is being bullied in school, and is pretty down.

He meets a young girl and befriends her,who is actually a vampire, being fed blood from the kills her current ageing beau makes.

Their relationship develops, and the realisation of what is actually happening occurs to you.

The depth of the story does not immediately reveal itself,as the film is almost entirely atmosphere, classic Scandanavian sparseness, the director uses the snow and darkness beautifully, there is no stupid music to point you in any direction......

The few bits of gore are entirely relevant to the tale.

The combination of a naive childhood relationship, and the feeling of the young boy being coerced is both beautiful and chilling.

excellent film to puff along to,lots of silent absorbing moments.

Yes, my curiosity about that film has tweaked here & there - thank you for the review. Another film (Scandinavian?) that's got raves here & there is "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." It's been raved about by both educational news outlets and everyday press. Every time I read the subject matter about it...I just don't see what the interest (for me) would be. Have you seen this one, Mazolaman - or know anybody who has and is just walking around with stars and glitters in their eyes, they're so captivated!? Again, thanks for that review, I may need to seek it out soon

Both films are Swedish,I think, definitely Scandy.

They both are definitely that sparse moody kind of film that only Scandinavians can do,the difference being that Let the right one in is a Love/horror film, dragon tattoo is kind of a detective mystery, and a character study of the dysfunctional detective, and the tattooed girl.

Both great films, and as LotusGuy says, watch the originals!(that's always true though, isn't it)?

Haunting melancholia.

Nice movie indeed and IMO, more violent/gorier than the American remake of 'Let Me In'.

Watching it, the main male actor in the Scandinavian version leaves you feeling sorry for him too for a number of reasons.

Favourite scenes of the original version: "Let the right one in"

1) The start where the young girls minder grabs the guy and hangs him upside down to slash his throat and bleeds him out.

2) When the minder pours acid over his own face and you get to see the flesh burn/melted away in the hospital, very graphic and well done.

3) Thw swimming pool scene toward the end where the bullies try to drown the young guy and the vampire comes to the rescue. (You literally see heads and limbs falling into the water!! :2thumbs:

Favourite scenes of teh American version: "Let Me In"

1) NONE - The original is the best, dont waste your time on the remake.

Agreed, an absolutely cracking movie.

2 scenes really stood out for me -

First where the young lad and the girl go into a storecupboard /hideout. At this stage he does not realise who/what she is and he cuts his finger accidentally, she gobbles up the blood from the floor and when she has finished looks at him and for a split second you see her as an old woman before she screams 'get out!!'..

Secondly the scene where she massacres the gang of bullies at the swimming pool.

Both scenes are creepy as hell.

Yep it is creepy as hell, again, without the use of any music, the stillness and snowy silence just adds to the scariness of it.

A film that you don't really figure out for a while....

read the books. seriously, read the books. fabulous trio. the first takes some people about 50 pages to get into tho any sort of finance background makes it no problem. then ity heads off into a brilliant thriller.

Hey, folks, update: I've seen both "Let the Right One In" AND the original "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" - WHHHOOOO!!! Both excellent, patiently done quality fare. Enjoyed a Hoyo de Monterrey DC while watching the Dragon tatooed girl. Watched let right one in w/my brother. And yes, the scene where the bullies at the pool get what for - entertainment ecstasy akin to Boggs going back to his cell with Byron Handlin waiting for him in "Shawshank Redemption" - sweet! :2thumbs: One thing my brother noticed in "Let Right One In"; there's a scene where the young girl and our young protagonist go into a darkened room (not for any hanky-panky) and in the dark you can see just briefly the girl's eyes glow with an animal-like reflection just before the lights get turned on...look for that the next time you view. It's brief but HIGHLY effective film work and really unsettling. Four thumbs up for both these films!

Glad you enjoyed them Cigcars, they have a certain kind of atmosphere that only the Scandanavians can do.

They are now plugging the remake of Dragon tattoo, and while I think Craig is a good actor, I won't be racing to see it.

Why do they do these re makes?
