sharil Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 caught myself 2 rats in a live trap (not too sure how that happens. do they travel in pairs?). They're quite small (mice?) pair. Now I'm not sure what to do with them. How do you guys dispose caught rats? Thinking of terminating them to be honest but can't figure the best and quickest way to do it.

I used to work in a pet store and we would get people asking for fresh killed mice and rats all the time. Its hard since its on a trap, but you want to pull the head away from the body in a quick motion and snap the spine. Id take a flat piece of metal and place it right behind the head...slam the piece of metal with a book, hammer, etc and you should kill the mouse quick, easy, and (hopefully) painless for the animal.
Martindelmundo Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 When I was younger I grew up on a farm and we live trapped varmints and vermon and what I used to do was relocate certian animals so it was humane but rats do spread disease so humane was a .22 mice would sometimes go for a swim in the pond where the bass and catfish would swallow them up

Burial at sea. Flush 'em, since they're not too big. Vermin aren't worth the bullets.
davidl Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Put the trap in a bucket of water. Easiest and cleanest.
investandprosper Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Put the trap in a bucket of water. Easiest and cleanest. Death by drowning is WAY more humane than a quick blow to the head (sarcasm). Those who voted to drown them can't be serious?
sharil Posted May 20, 2011 Author Posted May 20, 2011 I left it out on the sun. Checked again when I wanted to go grab lunch them buggers are all stiffed. RIP. Last time I checked it was something like 35 - 37 deg Celcius outside.
davidl Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Death by drowning is WAY more humane than a quick blow to the head (sarcasm). Those who voted to drown them can't be serious? I agree that it is inhumane..by easiest I meant easiest for the human side... Not many people are willing to get close enough to kill a rat with a blunt force - it's much harder to execute.

I'll give you that. If you're going to do it, you can't give a half-hearted blow.

laficion Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 I would try to find someone who has a snake or a place where there are snakes and give the snake a treat

PigFish Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Humane way to kill a rat! Now I have heard everything. Okay guys what do you use on ants? Harsh language? -Piggy
benjaminbbush Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Just a general question here, not pointed at any particular poster on this thread BUT why set the trap if you were not prepared to deal with what you caught? I too grew up on a farm and trapped fur animals growing up. How to dispose of mice is one thing. What to do with the skunk you just caught is totally different. I learned that day that if you set the trap be prepared to deal with what you caught and quickly. Lingering on your decision only prolongs the agony of both you and the animal!
brutusthebuckeye Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Its a F'in rat!!!!! Kill,Kill,Kill.....anyway is a good way.....Get a sledgehammer out...they wont feel a thing!!!
PigFish Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Its a F'in rat!!!!!Kill,Kill,Kill.....anyway is a good way.....Get a sledgehammer out...they wont feel a thing!!! LOL... my first thoughts exactly!
cgarner Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Its a F'in rat!!!!!Kill,Kill,Kill.....anyway is a good way.....Get a sledgehammer out...they wont feel a thing!!! Exactly what I did when the house I was trying to sell got infested by rats. I moved to CA and my Realtor was suppose to keep it clean. I came back after 6 months for a check up and found rat nests all over the basement. Went and found a blunt object and started smashing. Killing rats on the nest is easy.
TMS36 Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Do you have a small storage bin or bigger tupperware container? Put the trap in it and connect a hose to your cars exhaust and put the other end in the container. Put on the lid and duct tape around the gap. Instant gas chamber, it's a little bit of work but will be painless for the little bastards.
Rogers72 Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Next time, set a kill trap. The only reason for live traps is if you have a specific need for the alive animal once you caputre it. You don't really want to relocate a wild animal.

Lingering on your decision only prolongs the agony of both you and the animal! I also agree with hutch on the big un's. But the racoons were a terror. The live traps we had you could roll it upside down and the trap door would open and they could get away, skunks can create a stink dead or alive so with a 8 foot 2x4 your could roll the cage. Always carried a Mark I ruger as well to be prepared. I said humane just to be a bit "politically correct" with the rats, instead of saying "I shot the fXXking thing"
Matt Day Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 im going to confess that i breed hmasters for show and have a very old book in my possesoin ( 1950s) wich tells you how to build a rodent gas chamber i think when i am hhome next i will type out the text and add it here thougth wouldnt do it myself seems dangerous it it where me mysel i would use rat poison

Punch hole in lid with a nail. 1 can of automotive starting fluid. Spray into hole until rodent stops scratching. For fun, flick a match at pail. -LOL -Piggy
TMS36 Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 CO2 also works very well, it's just most people don't have it laying around. I have a tank for my draft beer system and have used it before for disposing of vermin, that and my .22 pellet gun lol

cigcars Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 *Well aside from you Richard Kuklinski's on the board, I once accidently killed a rat when I was eleven years old. I saw it in a swimming pool, got a long tree branch...was trying to just drive it out of pool. I raised it up, brought it down (it was a very long branch & my aim was - well), it crashed onto the rodent's head, it went "Squeak!" and floated upside down dead into oblivion.
