rsd Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 Is there likely to be any downside to aging cigars and wine together in a thermoelectric cooler? Will the wine age fine at 65% humidity? I gather 16-18 degrees should be fine for aging wine. Will the wine / anything released through the corks have any effect on the cigars? The idea would be to keep the cigars in dress boxes. I'll use beads for humidity if they do the trick, otherwise something like an oasis if I have to. Any thoughts?
thechenman Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 It is not a problem until one of your wine bottles with a bad cork leaks into the thermoelectric fridge. That spilled wine would not be good for your cigars. We're not talking a lot of wine here, but the aroma coming off the wine could affect your cigars in time. I think it would be best to keep them seperate.
Rogers72 Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 put the wine on the bottomw shelf and cigars above them so they don't leak onto your cigars if something were to happen to them. Otherwise, I see no problems with it.
Fuzz AI Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 The only downside I can see are the sharing of aromas between the wine and the cigars. If a bottle leaks, your cigars may absorb that smell. And as cork is permeable, the wine may pick up the cigar smell. Of course, if all your wines have screw cap enclosures, then I see no problem. Rogers72 does make a good point of storing your cigars above the wine if you do decide to keep the two together.

Acording to him, it NEVER HAS EVER HAPPEND! "Do ya' feel luck? Well do ya'... punk???" I would not store them in a confined space together. A box of cigars costs more than a wine fridge for you wine. -Piggy
rsd Posted May 4, 2011 Author Posted May 4, 2011 Thanks guys, settled then. Separate storage it is! No need to take any chances with such an expensive hobby.
Fuzz AI Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 You can always just ziplock bag your boxes (with a couple of Boveda packs thrown in for RH control) if you want to keep them in the cooler.

I'm seriously considering buying a small cheap thermoelectric cooler and building my own data logger + temperature controller at the moment. I may be losing my mind.

That's how I keep mine, it's the best aging method for me. But I double zip them with one Boveda in each zip. Keeps rh much better than single zip it seems not be able to hold at target RH
