CigarmanTim Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 I can be brutally honest. Some people are put off by that. Often I just don't say anything but when asked, out comes my opinion. Imagine a poorer, older, uglier Simon Cowell.... I tell you this so you know I am not blowing smoke up your ass and trying to pump up a custom cigar that has gotten only a luke warm reception. I, like many of you have been salivating over the Tampa. Many of the Czar reviews have put me off to the point where I changed my order to Tampa's only. The hell with the Czar. The day came when I excitedly opened my bundle of customs only to find they weren't the cigars I ordered. I'm glad it happened. I opened up the Czars and the most incredible aroma wafted about. The dark wrapper glistened with oils begging to be fondled. Still disappointed about the mix up I put the Czar's in my humidor. Four days later after Jameson 12yr loosened me up, I threw caution to the wind and lit one up. I understand this cigar is green and needs about 2 years to settle...so I thought. The Czar had me at hello. Packed tightly the draw was a little tight for a few millimeters. It opened up and blossomed. How can this be? It's too young, too green, too harsh, needs to sit, overly harsh...none of the above. I once asked Rob to pick out a box of Party Lusis that blew him away...beautiful dark wrappers, the PSP of PSP's. The balance of ligero to seco favored the seco. Same here. The Czar was exactly on target. The total smoke time was over 2 hours. It was memorable. Will it get better with age? I don't care if it does. I like them now. It wasn't complex. It stayed true the entire smoke. Maybe in that respect it will appreciate with age. Not trusting myself because of the Jameson, I lit another up a few days later. I was not disappointed. This time I teamed it with Hennessey XO. Total smoke time was 2 hours 20 minutes. A wonderful experience. Same as above. It hit the mark and left me a believer. Too many BOTL that I trust have given this an average review..it makes me wonder... Did Rob instruct the roller to change the blend from 1st batch to second batch?? Great is a term too often used. This cigar is good+ right now.
Puros Y Vino Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 The Czar delivers in spades. I reviewed one months back while it was young and was very impressed. They are the most attractive cigars in my humidor which is a shame. Because they're going to go by way of the flame.
lemmycaution Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 Nice! I liked the Czar from the first batch, just not as much as the Tampa. I'll try a newer one on Friday because of your review. Thanks for the heads up.
mazolaman Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 I've got 3 of each from the second round, and am resisting like mad to let em settle down a bit. But,I don't know how much longer I can wait......
CBL Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 Loved this review! Like you I was browsing for some Tampa's after all the reviews. I still hope I can get some rather sooner than later. Now I probably have to put this one on the wish list as well.
Rogers72 Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 i received mine when they first came out and let both the Tampa and Czar rest for 2 months or so before trying either. The Tampa was UNBELIEVABLE. The Czar had great flavors but like so many others have said...packed tightly and needed some time. I still have two left and I'd imagine those two are already much better now with just a few more months on them but I'll probably give them a bit more. I think they will be VERY special...it sounds like they may be getting there now.
ckearns Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 Nice write up. It read like yours were from the first batch. Can you confirm this please? Nevertheless, I'm glad you found them so nice because I was starting to get a little nervous about them based on the other reviews. I received both customs from the 2nd batch last month. The aromas are incredible and I have them tucked away for future enjoyment. Cheers.
Dbone Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 Nice review Tim. Do customs suffer from the same inconsistencies as regular production... I'd hope not as much. I haven't bit at Robs customs as of yet, though I'm getting real close. Sounds like your smoke was a real cracker, considering only 4 day rest. 2 hour smoke, wow, heavy finish?

As I was sitting there and smoking my third Czar.. I was wondering, why can't regionals be so good. Here we have a business on their first try and they are smoking (pun intended) the Regionals...What gives? I know it is a smaller production but come on...Why would I waste money on the Regionals again? The finish was just like the first third. Very consistent. I will say that I felt in my sinuses the next morning the freshness of the cigars.
