kiwicrusaders Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 The cigars I have really enjoyed todate have been the Monte PE, Saint Luis Rey Regios and to some degree the Partagas P2. I have been less impressed with the Partagas D4 and Hoyo de Monteray Epicure Especial. Now I managed to get my hands on 1x Bolivar Royal Corona ... which I really disliked (it had absolutley no flavor, no cofee cream ... nothing). Given my the cigars I have liked ... do you think I just got a dud or do you think that maybe Bolivar's profile is possibly not for me or they are routinely inconsistant. Any advice is much appreciated ! The reason I ask is that even although I have had a bad expereince I am considering getting a box of 10 (dont want to risk getting another single from the previous vendor).
adic88 Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 While i won't say the BRC has no flavor, no coffee, no cream, i will say that they do not really match the taste profile of the cigars you've mentioned that you enjoy. I would say the BRC compares well with the PSD4s (almost like how the Diplomaticos is to the Montecristos). So if you dislike the PSD4, it's not much of a surprise that the BRC you had didn't do anything for you. However, i would encourage you to try at least a few more, perhaps from different boxes. Cigar flavours have a way of growing on you, and they treat each of us differently in subtle ways. Have a couple more before passing final judgement.
dicko Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 IMHO they are the weakest of the bolivar line. [ducks for cover to avoid hitting by the legion of BRC fans]
investandprosper Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 I've had BRCs that taste like what you described, and I've had some that are overflowing with coffee, cream, and earthy goodness. You just need to get a good box. Same goes for the Belicosos Finos. Try a Petit Corona, Corona Extra (from a cab), or a Corona Junior to get the true Boli flavor profile.

mbrody Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 You just need to get a good box. Same goes for the Partagas D4 It's a humbling hobby. You have to try and test, taste again before you can make any good judgements, otherwise, you may short change yourself. Even Dicko would turn a new leaf if he tried a good sample!
cgarner Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Every Royal Corona I've had has been full of flavors. I've been through a box and a half and probably had 1-2 duds at the most. I say try another.

bassman Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 IMHO they are the weakest of the bolivar line. [ducks for cover to avoid hitting by the legion of BRC fans] I agree. Try any other Bolivar with "corona" in the mane & you'll be in for a treat.
jedipastor Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 The easiest answer is that your BCR was just in a "flat period" (too young maybe) or possibly just a bad stick. I've only had like 4 BCRs, but I have loved them all. Tons of flavor. I can see someone not liking the flavors that a BCR has, but if you had little to no flavor at all, something was wrong! To me the BCR is the creamiest of the line, but also the least spice. There are some floral notes as well. I prefer the CE and PC, but the RC is great for me ... perfect daytime cigar.
mazolaman Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Brc are the least powerfull of the bolivar range, but they usually have plenty of flavour, plenty of creaminess,so if you want a flavourful robusto, try again,if you want a more Bolivaresque Bolivar try the above mentioned.....
SCgarman Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 I am smoking a box from 08 and they are great. Flavors of deep earth, leather, some espresso notes and a long smoking time for a robusto. About an hour and 20 minutes. Don't judge the cigar after just smoking one.

I've had similar experiences with PSD4, BRC and HDM Epicure Especial but in saying that I've had a BRC from local B&M which was excellent. I just attributed it being too young. I still do not get the PSD4, I've had more than 5 sticks (couldn't get the box code) which were very bland.

ZinZan, I have had probably 10+ PSD 4 that I just kept scratching my head saying why the heck are these so popular?!? Then I got a box that started mellow and changed 8 months later to unbelievable cracker smokes. Don't even ask how many boxes of them I have now... And Dicko, if my current box is above average, I will gladly send you one! But I will have to sample first...
bstarrs Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 I recieved a box of BRCs about 4 weeks ago that are still resting. They look beautiful and I'm excited to try them, so I'll be sure to get back with my opinion when I do. I've got some more Boli boxes on my hitlist, what would you guys say is smoking best now between the Petite Corona and Corona Extra. I'm already deadset on getting a box of Belicosos Finos.
