Hey everyone,

So, back in October, a bunch of us decided to get together for a little social night in Toronto. It went really well, and we had a blast. Here's the old thread on that get together:

http://www.friendsofhabanos.com/forum/inde...howtopic=103704

Anywho, I've been doing some trades and buys and chatting with Bundwallah (Frank) and CDNeh (Stephen), and we decided it was high time for another get together.

So, we're looking at similar details as before.

We're looking at doing this during the evening of Saturday, March 26th, 2011. Venue-wise, we're looking at doing it at one of the three main downtown Toronto cigar-friendly spots, either at Remy's, The Drake, or the Park Hyatt. Here's some of their webpages and info:

Remy's is in the Yorkville area of Toronto, at 115 Yorkville Avenue, and has a very outstanding and large patio. Decent prices, pretty good food, and very cigar friendly.

Next pick is the "Roof Lounge" at the Park Hyatt Hotel:

There's an indoor area and a smaller outdoor patio area that can accommodate about 20 people. Great views, excellent food, a bit more expensive than Remy's but still reasonable. The problem is, is that we can't specifically reserve or book off the patio. That is something that Frank has been e-mailing back and forth with their service manager about, but it's not likely going to happen. C'est la vie. The risk we'd take there, then, is that there's not enough room for us all to go out to enjoy a cigar.

Last, but definitely not least, is the rooftop patio at the Drake Hotel:

The are very much "smoker friendly" and "climate defiant" which means that rain or shine, we can hang out there, not get soaked and enjoy our cigars. This is where we had the get together in October, and it rained. For stretches....it POURED. Well, we still had a blast. All areas, save for the main smoking area, are either indoors or sheltered. We had excellent food, drinks were plentiful, great, and decently priced, the views were amazing (yeah, I'm talking 'bout your thoughts LonsdaleTO!
:D
), and we just had a rounded good time. They have multiple bars (6 or 7 different ones?) and three or four different "restaurants". We had some great steaks, some great wobbley-pops, and a multi-cigar night that kept us out past our bedtimes.

This spot, The Drake, we think might be our call for this March 26th get together also.

At this point, the date is set. For timeing, we're thinking about meeting for maybe 4 or 5 or 6pm-ish?

The only thing that's up in the air is the location.

If Frank can work his magic a bit, we might be looking at the Park Hyatt. But, if we can't get an exclusive reservation there, then it's maybe best to make the arrangements for this to be at The Drake again. With the potential weather issues at the end of March, to be on the patio at Remy's is just too much of a gamble. It'll be best to look towards Remy's for May/June and onwards.

So, likely The Drake, on the evening of Saturday, March 26th, from 4pm onwards, until ????

Just pipe in on this thread, and let us know if you intend to join us.

Cheers, from Bundwallah, CDNeh, & CanuckSARTech. (aka Frank, Stephen, and Keith).

Also, on a bit of a side-note, I'll be staying up in T.O. that night, and will then be going over to Niagara to visit some old stomping grounds. I plan on going rainbow trout fishing along the Niagara River - there's a few hot tips that I got, about some nice stretches (all dependent about weather conditions, obviously).

But, on the Sunday, I fully intend to catch me a couple of steely beasts - especially considering for the day after the get together, for anyone coming out, if anyone from the area cares to join me, the more the merrier.

Tom in Toronto here. My 2 cents is to go for the more weather friendly local of the three alternatives. As for the fishing on Sunday... wow!!!! A very tempting proposition. I have not been stealhead fishing in a while but always enjoyed it. Weather permitting, what's the plan on the fishing side of things?

Yeah, that's what Frank and I were thinking - thus, The Drake (unless the Park Hyatt will segregate it out for us, unlikely now). We'll know 100% in another day or two, as to the specific location. We'll likely save Remy's for the nicer weather of mid-/late-spring.

For the fishing, I'll just be shore fishing. Planning on trying to get my full limit of 5 on the Sunday if I'm lucky. Will be planning to focus on the stretch of the river from the whirlpool, south from there, up to the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge. That'll be my focus, from what I've been steered to look at. From a tip, they're just chomping at the bit to get caught - high probability of 14 lb'ers, right up to mid-20's, and the February/March months are supposed to be peaks for in that area.

Obviously, weather and safety will maybe need to come into play there. But, I'll know more by the get-together weekend.

I have never fished the Niagara before but have done quite a bit of steelhead fishing in the credit river just west of toronto. Never got a float reel myself so always used a high end spin cast with a 12 foot fenwick ultralight.

I've gotta check fishing regs and whatnot, but I plan on hitting them up with spawn sacs/eggs, and/or PowerBait trout dough, and/or big arse gold-&-silver Williams Wablers. Lots of casting, bottom-draging set-up with sinking jigs and whatnot, and lots of casting and retrieving likely. We'll see how well things go, as things get closer.

Sidetracked.....

Thanks for posting Keith. I'll have a new poster up in a day or two. I look forward to meeting everyone for the 1st or 2nd time. :lookaround:

Gah! I would be totally up for another cigar night in TO... sadly I already have tickets to the orchestra and plans with a girl and I don't think it would be smart to blow her off to hang out with the boys. You'll have to made all the double entendres to the inebriated female patrons on my behalf. :rotfl:

Will do, Garfield. As long as we don't run into the same ones as before - THAT was a little bit scary! :rotfl:

Looking back now, I don't know it was such a great idea having her try our cigars... especially since you don't know where she's been.

LOL. Yes, we know EXACTLY where she'd likely been. Unfortunately for us, it likely involved a prescription of some sort. :PB):(

And, completely understood of your reasons (I'd pick that too). But, depending how the evening goes with the show and whatnot, feel free for you and your lady friend to join us near the end of the evening if you wish, for a nightcap or two.

If not, no worries. Your company will be missed though. Next time, senor. Cheers.

Folks. Spread the word to other locals you know or have just "friended". The sooner we know about attendance numbers the better. B)

CB

Almost 100% at the Drake. B) It depends on the numbers. Park Hyatt roofop lounge is a possibility if attendance is below 18 members. We're meeting them on Monday to check it out. I'd prefer if more BOTL's can make it out at which point the Drake is a go. In the Summer we can hit Remys. Their patio is massive.

Stay tuned.

Can't make any promises, weekends are kind of busy sometimes, but I will try to make it to the Drake on the 26th.

Stealing this from DonPedro's introduction thread:

Agreed. Great stuff on the CBC radio. As for Correnti's I must have called them 3-4 times to plan a visit, see the rolling in action etc. Could never get around to it. There was a good article in the Toronto Star about a year ago. Don't see it online anymore though.

Maybe we could arrange a field trip to Correnti's as part of one of our meet-ups. I'd be sure to get my permission form signed for that! :D

Fantastic idea! With enough notice I could set it up so there's a roller there, plus let them know how many sticks we want to buy. I'm sure there's a cigar-friendly place in walking distance too...
