bob25 Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 After viewing this review I had to put 2 boxes with the same box code in the cigar locker for some long term aging. Thanks
jedipastor Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 I've never had an 898, but it's been on my "must try" list for a while. Now it's going straight to the top! I do love the Series P and the Short.
maalouly Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Pissing off Ken's balcony is like pissing in the bush, his backyard is a river and trees, so next time I am up there will be doing the same. Love the 898 and goinig to order a box of these same code, Ayala put one aside for us
investandprosper Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Pulled one of these out in the humi because of this review, and it was absolutely glorious. Just finishing off the final third. The '09s are truly coming into their own.
PLUSH Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 is there better boxes to pick from in 09? Did this happen to be the box you had or have you tried others and this was the best?
El Presidente Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 is there better boxes to pick from in 09? Did this happen to be the box you had or have you tried others and this was the best? I never pick the best box to review. Just the standard run of the mill box.
Guest rob Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 is there better boxes to pick from in 09? Did this happen to be the box you had or have you tried others and this was the best? The 898's are one of my top two favourite cigars... but unfortunately as much as I love them - sometimes bad batches do appear. I purchased 5 boxes last year (all '09 box code) and they are all ****. They are extremely underfilled and totally off profile. You only need to look at the foot of one, or feel the lack of weight in the hand, to realise how poor they are. But when you get a good one... then you're in for a hell of a good time!

In fact, the first one I chose today was plugged, so I put it back and grabbed another. Last year (the last time I smoked one of these), they weren't as good. Profile wasn't really there and it was just a boring smoke. Perhaps yours needed more time?
Guest rob Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Perhaps yours needed more time? Unfortunately, time wont fix the problem of the missing leaf....
SCgarman Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 I was just gifted one of these from a fellow BOTL and after seeing Rob's review I look forward to smoking this cigar.
shortsqueeze Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 I have some of these and I smoked one today. Fabulous. It had the character of the early 2006 version, but in better balance. The ligero is incredible. Starts with rich earth, dark chocolate and espresso, lots of depth. Not much pepper or spice which is fine with me. I could see confusing this cigar with a Bolivar in profile. It shows some sweetness into the second third and turns (cleverly) very powerful into the last. Not bitter, tannic or out of focus for even a second. Ready to smoke now. You could smoke the whole box right away and not be faulted. God knows what time will do to these cigars, but I can't see anyone having the willpower to find out. They are too good now! Maybe if they go sick they'll stand a chance.
SethLG Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 I love this cigar, what a beauty. With that being said, Rob is right. I have gotten as many poorly constructed ones as great ones.
Stalebread Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 (snip)got a box of these from '05 and its like someone forgot the ligero. haven't tried them in a couple of years though. (snip) Had one of these this afternoon (Mar. '05). Remembered your comment here. Not ready to say that it had no ligero but it sure was not a strong cigar. Not spicy. Not creamy, either. Leather, earth but with a touch of citrus mixed in which I thought was a little unusual. Not complaining, it was actually a pretty good smoke.
