maroon141 Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Just a quick note to say Hello! from snow covered Minnesota USA. I came here after Bob and Dale from Dogwatch Cigar Radio said this forum was an entertaining and informative group of people who enjoy good cigars. I lurked around for a while then decided to gain membership...thank you El'Presidente! I've been smoking cigars for the last couple of years...seriously for the last 6 months. If you ask my wife, it's turned into an obsession. She's probably right...I'm obsessed with finding that right cigar that makes you sit back and say, WOW! That was a good smoke! Can't say I've found it yet. To be honest, I've smoked what I thought were Cubans before when in Mexico...but after researching cigars...I'm guessing they were fakes....so I'm a Cuban Cigar Virgin. I smoke mostly Nicaraquan blends. If I may be so bold on my first post to pose a question...I truly believe that a good smoke combined with a good beverage makes a special event even more memorable....this summer, my step-son is getting married...we've always had a great time smoking cigars, sipping on some bourbon and chatting. I'd like to treat him and some special friends with a really good cigar paired with a perfectly matched beverage. If you would be so kind to give me some ideas I'd be forever grateful. Sorry for such a rambling...I'll go back to my lurking. Thanks for having me on!
#2 man Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Welcome to the forum ! We're glad to have you !!
CanuckSARTech Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Cheers and welcome. As for pairings, it's hard to say - depends on if the beverage preference is more for rum, scotch, wine, etc., for you and your step-son. As for my pie-in-the-sky, blind shot at it? I'd say a nice scotch or a well-aged dark rum, would easily go well with a nice Trinidad Fundadore or a Cohiba Robusto. Two greats, IMO.

I've never had dark rum with a cigar...I will have to try that. Thanks!

First I would like to welcome you to FOH ,I'm sure you will enjoy. The forum is a great place if you wish to learn about Cuban Cigars and the complexity of a great Habano. If I may, I would advise you to PM El Prez or Lisa (First Lady) and simply tell them what you look for in a cigar and your tastes and I'm sure that a sampler pack could be arranged to get you started on the road to enjoying some fine moments. Above all, have fun Cheers

mazolaman Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Hi Maroon, and welcome. For your pairing,I don't think you can go wrong with any mid strength Cuban, say a Diplomatico no 2,and a good quality spirit,be it a Single malt,Rum or Cognac.
Peter11216 Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Welcome. Regarding the cigar drink pairing. I don't want to give specific advice, because everyone has their own unique tastes. However, as a general method, I like to drink something that will change how I taste the cigar. For example, if a cigar has bitter, coffee or chocolate tastes, then I like to pair it with a bitter drink. The idea is that the drink dampens my perception of the bitter flavors in the cigar, and allows me to better taste the sweet flavors lurking around that I wouldn't normally be able to perceive. Along the same lines, if I'm going to drink a scotch with a cigar, I like to start the cigar first, drinking water perhaps, or nothing, and then try the drink after have a chance to taste the cigar on its own. Not sure if that helps. Best, Pete
ryans Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Welcome to FOH! I tend to make my pairing based on the cigar. For example, if the cigar is spicy or woody then I like to pair it with a Caribbean rum with a bit of sweetness to it, and I love a creamy cigar with single malt. But these is just my likings, to each his/her own.
maroon141 Posted March 4, 2011 Author Posted March 4, 2011 Thanks Petrus and RyanS. Definitely good advice!
thechenman Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Welcome to the happiest place on earth...and I'm not talking Disneyland...
