I just received my first internet order of Cubans today. A 3 pack of Partagas P2 in tubes. Mold. Two of the three. Besides my obvious disappointment that none of them can go near my humidor to rest are there any other problems that I need to worry about?

It's pretty heavy looking...would you still wipe away and smoke? Should I let the vendor know? I don't think that I will bother returning them.

Man...I was relly looking forward to my first Cubans since I have been getting more serious about my smokes.

I would not accept those. These look nasty. Your vendor should take those back. If he doesn't, I'd find another vendor.

I would contact the vendor and send them pics to show them it is mold. They might have a problem with their stock, and need to be made aware of it. As long as the mold is not growing out of the foot, then I have no problem with wiping it off and smoking it. However, you should always contact a medical professional before smoking anything covered in mold.... <_<

Yes, I just sent them a message. I believe that they are a fairly large vendor. I told them that I wasn't looking for any retribution, just that I was very disappointed since this was my first order.

I probably wasn't going to deal with them again as I had made that order before I found the Czar. I'm quite confident that the rest of my Cuban shopping will be happening here. They make me feel warm and fuzzy...just like my Partagas!

Don't you mean, complete with a need for anti-biotics a few days later? :P;) Nothing a good topical prescription cream couldn't cure, I'm sure.:DB)

But, as Pres stated, one of the major drawbacks with tubos - if they're initially too wet, and/or aren't checked by the retailer, it's not hard for them to get excessive on the mold. I myself do like to get certain cigars ordered now and again in the tubos format, but for the first few weeks/months after buying, I like checking them over, taking them in and out, making sure there's not a mold issue to start with (especially with that first inspection upon receiving them). But then, in the longterm, the tubos are nice.

Definitely can't hurt to let the retailer know, give them the option of taking a return if they and you would like. But, if the mold isn't rainbow coloured (just white, or an off-white/light-yellow shade), then you're fine, as long as the mold isn't growing within the cigar. If it's fuzzy coming out from the foot, that's where the shady territory begins. If it's just on the wrapper however, then a good wipe-down and cleaning is all you need to do.

Lol...good 'ol anti-biotics. Where would I be without 'em!

I did let them know. They have got back to me already requesting pictures and trying to educate me on plume. I have no intention of returning them. Too much hassle for two cigars. If they would like to send me replacements though, I will not object.

I just finished smoking the worst of the bunch. Dusted it off and fired her up, it didn't seem too bad at first and in fact had a moment of greatness before the first inch. Then it became hard to draw and started to canoe on me. It was still too moist even after spending time travelling the globe. About a third of the way in it improved again. Really nice flavor and some good, thick smoke. That lasted only for a couple of puffs. Then it became bitter and hard to draw and wanted to extinguish itself. I spent the next third puffing furiously trying to keep it lit...sucking back a dank, grassy taste that reminded me of the wet, half fermented clumps of grass under the lawn mowers deck.

Finally I gave up and let it die. I could still see how these Partagas are a wonderful smoke under the right condition and am really looking forward to the one that I have resting now in my humidor.

Well, it definitely sounds like it was over-humidified. Sounds like something that's fresh from 70-75% storage conditions maybe. Considering the cigar is a tubo, with you saying "...it was still too moist even after spending time travelling the globe..." - that wouldn't come into play as much, due to the cigar being sealed up relatively air-tight in the tubos container. Not compared to a normal, wooden-boxed cigar, a trip wouldn't affect the RH as much. Those sound like they need to sit open for a while to dry out.

Either way, a learning experience.

Nothing to worry about...that's plume ;)

JSD, no doubt! I really didn't think they'd actually try to pass it off as such (I know they've not seen pics as of yet).

Hems - a good attitude - now you know where not to spend your dough.

I just had to share this. The response I just received after sending in the photos...

"Hello Warren,

It is always difficult from a photo, but the biggest giveaway is that mould is greenish and if wiped off always leaves a mark, plume is usually white, can look fuzzy, but never leaves a mark behind when wiped. I do realise you are being very good about this and informative, however, you are absolutely more than welcome to return these to us for a refund or exchange."

They are being very good about the ordeal and I wouldn't expect anything more from them...but I thought it was pretty funny.

It's good to hear they're being good about it, and sometimes these type of things are just unavoidable - no matter who the merchant.

I guess it's a tough business - service goes a long way, and I think I'd consider pre ship inspection a part of that service.

Again, I applaud your outlook.

I had Mag50 Tubos that had a ton of mold on them when I got them.

I dusted them off and they were the absolute BEST mag 50 I have ever had. Stonefruit bombs!

Send your Moldy P2's to my and I will send you my P2s without mold ;)

Very generous offer, mbrody! No, I am fairly new to the intricacies of cigars and I am actually going to use these fellas to learn about the changes that can take place with different levels of humidity. After sitting out for a couple of days one is going in my 70% humi and the remaining moldy specimen will be isolated in a small humidor with the 65% beads all by its lonesome. In a few months I will revisit them both!

haha funniest thread in a while, there seems to be TOO much knowledge about various molds here on all types of cigars ;)

Those pics look terrible I hope the vendor does the right thing!

One reason why I cbf with tubos cigars, I know lot's of BOTL's stand by em though.

Those are soem nasty looking pics. Looks like someone did a Bill CLinton/Monica Lewinsky move on them and now have a yeast infection. Maybe a bit of Monistat will work on them. Here's the link http://www.monistat.com/
