The gamble of the Cohiba Behike

Recommended Posts

Perhaps, although I've smoked better cigars right out of the mail.

But, I will check back with you in about a month for a 60 day review and I hope you are correct.

Small suggestion: take the cigars out of the original box and store them in another box or a singles drawer - the smell from the box/felt is brutal.

Codes are about as useful as a rabbits foot at a casino.

When you win you credit the Rabbits foot. When you lose you curse it. Different people at the casino are crediting and cursing the Rabbits foot all at the same time....

Excellent analogy. I never really thought of it that way. Interesting perspective, thanks.

I haven't helped you at all :D

LOL. Funny as hell for an ending, Rob. :D Don't underestimate yourself!

HSA gets plenty wrong. This time they got it right. Global demand for the Cohiba Behike line (52/54/56) launched February 2010 has been a unqualified success. Expensive but brilliant it was to be rolled in relatively small nummbers at the El Laguito factory using only the finest of rollers.

Demand far outstrips supply and quality/consistency has remained at the highest order. I can't recall another cigar released in Cuba over the past 12 years where attention to detail has been so pinpoint.

The back orders mount up. Production at the small El Laguito factory (utilising a specialist team of rollers for the Behike release) can't keep up. The leaf is available, the spirit is willing but there are only so many hours in a day....

I have smoked these BHK 56/54/52 (purchased from Cohiba Cigar Divan of Mandarin Hong Kong), and have to agreed with Prez Rob's comments. These are fantastic smokes and the price points are right on! They are priced between the Coh Robusto & Siglo VI & the Maduro Line. IMHO, their full tastes, aromas & flavors are definitely premium Cohiba and bring another level to the regular line-ups! Wrappers are so high-quality, so thin & colorado-colored (my favorite)!

Herewith some pics.... :angry:B):P

My BHKs are now in a desktop humi awaiting my next sampling. Thanks guys. Good suggestion. I've been wondering what's been stinking up my coolidor lately and that box was probably it (I ditched the cloth a long time ago).

The few Behikes I have smoked were amongst the best cigars I have smoked over the last few years. Best new relase in years. If they would be thinner I would be all over these. IMHO they are worth the price.

As for them not beeing rolled in the same factory I do not care much. Shame the marketing tells us a diffrent story but if the quality is the same I do not care much. I would prefer HSA would come forward with it thoug since nobody likes to been told fairytales. I would prefere them beeing produced in (too) small numbers if that would ensure their taste profile.

If the follow up production is good as well, time will tell. I am a firm beliver of first batches and so far I was only able to smoke Behikes made in march. The possibility of them going down the drain certainly is real. Especially if those rumors of a bad 2009 crop are true.

And yes, the boxes smell very nasty. I store the few I have in another box.

  • 6 months later...

I am smoking a fake behike right now. Tastes exactly like the Cohiba robusto. Yes, I said fake.

But hey, it only cost me 20USD.

I have a few BHK52's in my humidor from Rob and the gang which I will not touch for 3 months to insure they have had plenty of time to rest. I am also disappointed the HSA is playing games with the Behike brand. But I can't say I am surprised based on how that country is run. If my current stock of 52's smoke well in the next few months I will stock up, if they don't I will spend me money elsewhere.

HSA is not very smart. If supply is outstripping demand raise the price, don't make the same mistakes as they did in the late 90's-01' and overproduce an already excellent cigar. The exclusivity alone is what drives a lot of the sales. They need new marketing and business management.

Problem is, I am sure the Behika line will sell no matter what, look at the Monte 4.

Soon enough they will raise price and add more factories and rollers and the Behika will become another in the hit/miss game that is Cuban cigars.

Anyway it is a damn fine cigar right now, stock up while it lasts.
