Traz Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Ever notice with a smile (or glee) when a Cuban cigar appears in a movie or TV show you are watching? Do you sometimes automatically assume they are CCs even if you can’t tell for sure? In any case, I was thinking it would be awesome (and unique) to have a Master list of movies and TV shows where the little lovelies make an appearance, or play a major role, so to speak. More for ones that you liked and would thusly recommend; not every single one in existence. I’ll divide this list into two categories for both movies and TV series’, and when someone adds a new post sharing new entries, I’ll edit this post. Basically, if you see someone smoking a cigar just once or twice, it belongs in the lower category. If they appear several+ times throughout the movie/show (in many episodes, for the latter), then they belong in the upper category. Use your own judgement. You can add a description with your post, and perhaps link to the movie/show in question if it’s something obscure. Why does this matter? Well, it can be fun knowing to expect plenty of Cuban cigar cameos in a movie/etc, but it’s good to divide them into two categories so a person doesn’t get excited and then watch a whole movie where they only appear once. I’ll make a special category about (official) movies that are based primarily on//about Cuban Cigars. I doubt there’d be many TV shows. Movies Based On Cigars: (1) * Smoke * Smokin' Stogies * Blowing Smoke Movies Which Feature A Whole-Lotta-‘Cuba: (2) * Scarface * The Expendables Movies Where Cuban Cigars Make A Brief Appearance: (3) * Predator * Independence Day * House of the Dead TV Shows With Ample Cuban Cigar-Smoking: (4) * The Sopranos * Seinfeld * How I Met Your Mother * Two and a Half Men * Boston Legal * Entourage * Twilight Zone S4 Ep9 TV Shows With Minor CC Appearances: (5) * Prison Break * The Simpsons -- ^ The above are some examples I can vouch for 100% which are in the right categories.
Traz Posted November 12, 2010 Author Posted November 12, 2010 Here’s an example of a useful post in here: Category: 5 Name: Prison Break Description: The Warden has a taste for cigars, and at a point during season two even visits a cigar club to retrieve a certain something from a personal humidor stored there… http://www.tv.com/prison-break/show/31635/summary.html There isn't really a wrong answer, but if a few people think a certain show//movie belongs in a different category, it will be moved.
BolivarSmoker Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Two and a Half Men would go into category 4. There is quite a bit of cigar smoking. I have seen an episode where Charlie has a box of Cohiba Robustos and hands them out to some friends. Box and banded cigars make an appearance in that one. Also there is an episode where Sean Penn guest stars and smokes a PSD4.
CUBANO Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 The movie Blowing Smoke with Estella Warren. A very good comedy with a hot chick and a bunch of cigar smoking guys in a cigar shop.
Traz Posted November 12, 2010 Author Posted November 12, 2010 @ Cubano: Excellent suggestion with Blowing Smoke. Sounds very interesting, and you can't go wrong with comedy + hot chick + cigars. I placed it in the special category, and plan to check it out promptly. List has been updated, and we're off to a good start. Thanks for the contributions.
rckymtn22 Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 The Expendables, either category 3 or 4. Just scanned through the movie and noticed a part with Sly Stone smoking a cigar. Didn't notice the type but will up date once I watch the movie.
Traz Posted November 12, 2010 Author Posted November 12, 2010 A quick Google search came up with a forum where many speculate it's an Opus X, and some mentioned, "In the CA article they mention him smoking OPus, so it's very likely". In any case, I'll place it in the minor category for now since I haven't seen it myself, but if you notice cigars make several appearances throughout the movie, let me know and I'll bump it up to the Majors. Edit: Scratch that; I think it's a guarantee that The Expendables belongs in the major category, given Sly's past love for cigars, and a certain other actor who makes a special appearance in the movie, apparently. Still let me know if otherwise, though.
Omskakas Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Category: 4 Name: Boston Legal Description: At the end of every (not in season 1) episode Denny Crane and Alan Shore sit down on a balcony with cigars and whiskey and reflect what has happened in that episode. In the first season there is a definite Cohiba band on a cigar Denny is smoking. After that the bands are gone. But Denny and Alan sure are Habanos kind of guys, I think.
Cohiba007 Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Anyone know where to get a copy of blowing smoke? Amazon doesn't have them
Jesuscookies Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 What about all of the Sergio Leone Spag Westerns? Clint is smoking a long and skinny in lots of his roles. There's someone with a cigar in almost every scene..... That's what I was gonna say. "The good the bad and the ugly"... One of my favorites, but it looks like Eastwood is smoking "Backwoods" lol..
Wicky Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 Category: 4 Name: Twilight Zone. Episode: Printer's Devil (1963) Description: Burgess Meredith comes to "save" a failing small town newspaper. As a typesetter from hell. He is rarely seen without his crooked cigar (culebra) throughout the entire episode. YouTube.
Omskakas Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 What about all of the Sergio Leone Spag Westerns? Clint is smoking a long and skinny in lots of his roles. There's someone with a cigar in almost every scene..... Those are Italian Toscano cigars.
samb Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 For Category 3 in the utterly terrible movie, The House of the Dead, one of the characters is seen smoking cigars several times, but there is also a scene where he shows the others his stash of smuggled CCs. There are some partagas in there as well as others.
ryans Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 The Expendables, either category 3 or 4. Just scanned through the movie and noticed a part with Sly Stone smoking a cigar. Didn't notice the type but will up date once I watch the movie. X2 In the brief appearance that Arnold Schwarznegger made in the movie he is seen smoking a cigar, and Arnie is renowned for his love of CC's
bigfunkyg Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 I would say Entourage is in a Catagory 4. Frequent cigar smoking with multiple references to Cubans. Fantastic show too. Season 3 Episode 10 - "I Wanna Be Sedated" Eric has a cigar with Bob Ryan "Martin Landau" at his estate. I can't distinguish the cigar well enough but the have a distince second red band of the RE series, but I can't identify the main band. Might now even be cuban. Season 6 Episode 5 - "Fore" Eric light up a cigar on the golf course with his future boss (George Segal). Cigars do not appear to have any band on them.
