dicko Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 I don't think anyone's posted up a thread yet. Today is the 92nd Anniversary of the end of WW1. Just would like to pay my respects. I'm pretty lucky, live a really good life to be honest, in a free country, due in a large part to the sacrifices of others. Also, 10 blokes got their names added to the Honour Roll this year, having been killed in Afghanistan. I know for US and British members there's even more. Lest we forget.
Leopolis Semper Fidelis Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. - John McCrae

Aficionado Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 The war that did not solve anything, but several nations brought freedom. My Homeland, after 163 years, breathed the air of freedom. It's a great day for my Country. Happy Independence Day to all Polish friends, and lovers of Polish vodka. One shot for freedom and independence. On health. God, Honor,Homeland.

anacostiakat Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Great sentiments! I will raise a cup and have a smoke today for all those who serve, have served or lost their lives or loved ones in the service of their countries.
El Presidente Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Lest we forget those who have lost their youth so we can enjoy ours.
matt14 Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 We cherish too, the Poppy red That grows on fields where valor led, seems to signal to the skies That blood of heroes never dies
CanuckSARTech Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Excellent gents, thank you for posting. I have a number of military in my family, both present and deceased, and I'm just finishing up the process to potentially go in for a 3-year stretch as Military Police. Always enjoyable to see stuff like this. I too am grateful of the service by others, and always remember this day. Cheers.
fugwumpy Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Happy Veteran's(Armistice) Day to all. One of my buddies from the old unit sent me this note earlier today: It is the soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the organizer, Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protestor to burn the flag. ~ Father Dennis Edward O'Brian, USMC
samb Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 A thank you to all the veterans who have made our freedom possible.
rdb6 Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Today, Veterans Day is a day of remembrance. We remember the sacrifices servicemen and women have made to make our lives better. There is no greater sacrifice or greater honor then to lay down your life for the soldier next to you. You know he would've done the same for you. Thank you to all who have served in the name of freedom.
Baldy Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Thanks to all the men and women who fought for the freedom that we enjoy. As a child who survived the holocaust that was the killing fields of Cambodia, I never take the freedom and life that we have for granted. I live through and survived a system where there was no freedom and life is cheap. I've lost friends, aunts, uncles, grandparents and countless cousins to a regime similar to Stalin's Russia, Nazi Germany, North Korea, etc. Even to this day most of the world's population cannot express dissent, enjoy a fine cigar with friends whenever and wherever we wish. Never once in this great country have a lacked food, clothing and shelter. Opportunities galore. What a gift! What a privilege! Thanks to all that have served, is serving and to all those who support the servers.
brooklyn Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 I always reflect on this poem when remembering the sacrifices made by some for all. It is true that they gave their last full measure of devotion to the mates and countries. Long live this democratic experiment.
