I'm not a huge blended whisky fan. If I do reach for a bottle of blended, I grab Dewar's White Label or 12 - as it's had the most consistent flavor and it's my Dad's drink of choice, so it reminds me of him.

Anyway, not a huge fan of the Johnnie Walker line [blue is totally overpriced], but I recently tried the Green Label which is a 15 year old blended malt whisky [no grains]. I must say, I was really pleased. A combination of the Talisker and Coal Ila really give the blend a rich and balanced profile. It's only recently been released in wide distribution in the US [originally only travel retail].

Anyone else tried? Thoughts?

I agree! Green is one of the better ones in the Johnnie Walker line. Although it seems to have quite a strong/bad/unique smell. Different from the single malts that I usually drink.. Have you noticed that?

I'm not a big fan of Johhnie Walker either, although I would still like to try a glass of Blue sometime.

I have gone with the black over the green. Off batch, who knows, but on that day, the bottle of green I had was junk compared to a black bottle.

I have had the green before and I liked it, I'm not a big fan of the black or other lines.

But, everytime I go shopping single malts are the same price as the green bottle, so I always go with a single malt.

If the price comes down I would buy it from time to time.

I have had the green over here for the past 3 years. I actuall prefer it to the blue label. Lot better value for money, blue has a lot of hype surrounding it. Try the gold label, its good. Even better try Chivas 18yr old, best bang for buck.

Anyone try the JW Double Black? It was released earlier this year in six leading airport duty free stores (Bangkok, Dubai, Singapore, Beirut, JFk and of all places... Sydney). Apparently it is a peatier version of the Black.

Haven't tried it. I normally use JWB for mixing with coke when I'm in the mood. Otherwise I stick to a single like Dalwhinnie.

I like Johnny Blue but the price is just ridiculous.

Out of all the JW line, I really do love the Green.

I myself have not found it to have an off smell, I actally love the green label as it has a unique 'Smoky' aroma and flavour.

Its the only blended Scotch I have at home.

Have you tried Laphroaig? A lot of my friends who enjoy the Green, quite like Laphroaig. Personally I can't stand it, but to each his own.

Hi Fuzz.

Yes, I have tried Laphroaig but had it as a shot some time ago after obviously doing the wrong thing and mixing my drinks during a night out. As such, not only was I sick (Learnt a valuable lesson) but also, could not appreciate it to really remember much about it. :D:P

I'd love to give it a fair go sometime though as I've heard great things about it BUT equally, some negatives.

I've had the gold - pretty good, but tad pricey. When I went to a JW tasting, the brand ambassador recommended keeping the bottle of gold in the freezer, which I thought was a bit odd, and takes away from the intensity of the profile

+1 Gold

Gold brother, Gold! It's incredibly light and buttery and has a smoothness that the Black seriously lacks.

As long as we're talking about good single malts, you should check out Balvenie 21 Years Old PortWood. It's a bit pricey but damn good.

Couldn't agree more! I absolutely love the Balvenie Line, it's one that sits in the shadow and hasn't been discovered by many and let's keep it that way

I'd recommend Glenrothes for those that really like Balvenie as well. The Alba Reserve and 1994 Vintage are really nice

I've been drinking Green for a good 10 years and without a doubt my favorite scotch.

I tried to convince a friend that the swill (Chivas) he was drinking could not compare, so we did a blind test. Don't get me wrong, when I started drinking Scotch the Chivas was smooth and easy on the pallet, but as time went on and I started to taste the whiskey, Chivas was no longer my go to.

So, a friend of ours poured Black, Green, Blue, Chivas, Dewars and few single malts into shot glasses and we started tasting.

Drum roll.........we both picked the Green as our favorite. Dewars ended up being the one we cringed on.

At the end of the day to each his own.

P.S I would also recommend Buchanan 18 year for a good blended Scotch

Single: Talisker 15 or 18 (for the more woodsy taste), Dalwhinnie 15,

Weird to hear someone placing a bottle in the freezer. Vodka maybe, but Scotch...hmm. Only thing closely related would be how you take Blue Label. You drink cold water and then chase it down with Blue, but no freezer involved.

It's funny. I really love Dewars. White Label has been my dad's drink of choice for the last 30+ years, so that is probably where I acquired my taste from. I will say that the 12 y/o is much better than White. Amazing the difference. Not sure if you tried that. I had 18 about a week ago. Like pure toffee. Also, Aberfeldy [Dewars main fingerprint] is a great little single malt.

My favorite singles are: Balvenie DW 12; Laphroaig Quarter Cask; Highland Park 12 and 18; Oban 14. I like to rotate among Islay and Highlands based on what my palate is in the mood for/weather outside

Yeah, I was very surprised. But sure enough, at 2 JW tastings I went to, Gold was served freezing. It has the reverse effect, starting sweet and the finish was pepper/spicy. It was way too short though.

The Green...as yet my favorite blended scotch. Love the smoke.

The Gold, there were two varieties and they were different. I think Ken mentioned it before and I then discovered I had one of each! One was way too sweet and the other was incredible...soooo smooth! As best as I can recall the bottle with the sharp lined design on the bottom was the sweet one and the traditional bottom was the smooth one. I believe one had an age statement and the other was called the 'centennial blend.'. I think the centennial was the sweet one but I finished both bottles some time ago.

I've had the 18 Chivas before but prefer the Green. The only other blended I buy besides the Green and Gold is the Dimple Pinch which is a 15 yr.

I like green a lot, but if I am doing vatted malts, I'd rather save the money and do Famous Grouse 12 or 18. The main malts are Highland Park 12 and Macallan 12 in the FG 12. If I am going to spend the money it costs for Green, I'd just as soon buy Talisker. It's one of the main malts JW uses, so might as well just have the real deal in my opinion. In fact Johnnie Blue always sort of reminded me of someone cutting Talisker 18 with an 18-year-old Irish whiskey.

Isn't the green label a single malt?

Anyway, I prefer the gold label on the green - superior and smoother taste.

Nope...but that is a common misconception.

Green is just an excellent mainstream product. I would also probably prefer buying a Talisker 10 and Caol Ila 12 and doing the vatting myself. I don't know if the Cragganmore and Linkwood add a whole lot to the proceedings.

Not a huge fan of the blends but will drink a Chivas 12/18 if in the mood. I find the JW blends a bit bland for my tastes. These days I stick to the more peated malts. Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Talisker, Caol Ila but my favorite is Bruichladdich Octomore. It's hard to find and a bit pricy but it's well worth the price of entry if you like the south coast Islay malts.

I have a bottle of green label right now and I find it a little harsh and cant drink to much in one sitting even with a cigar and when i do have it with a cigar i have a strong cigar or it would be lost in the scotch, I have also had red, black, double black and gold labels and i think gold and green are the best so far cant wait to (if ever) try blue label. BUT let it be noted im not a huge fan of johnny walker i prefer signal malts
