Leopolis Semper Fidelis Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 For those on the South Island let us know how you are doing. Stay well! The magnitude has been "downgraded" to 7.1. Miraculously, no-one was killed, but at least a couple of blokes had serious injuries from falling masonry and glass. Lots of old, historic buildings badly damaged, water and sewage problems, power cuts, roads and railway lines badly affected in places. This happened on the east coast of the South Island, around Christchurch. On the same day as the quake, a plane carrying sky-divers crashed soon after take off at Fox Glacier, on the western side of the same South Island: nine died. I don't live in NZ's South Island, by the way.
MIKA27 Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 It's a really horrible event indeed. Approximately 1.5 Billion dollars of damage, and many, irreplaceable memories such as homes, photographs etc. Added to the quake, mass floorings, it's terrible. With such a large quake, there's bound to be a tsunami? I hope not.
mazolaman Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Christchurch is my favourite city in NZ,and I loved the South Island,so I'm gutted to hear of both incidents. Best wishes to you all. If memory serves, isn't this area where the "release valve" is,that hopefully prevents the "big one"?

Christchurch has great stone architecture; it has been described as "the most English city outside of England". The moniker "The Shaky Isles" has been attributed to NZ - deservedly so. No "big one" can be prevented from occurring, to the best of my knowledge. It could occur at any time, anywhere within the country.
Guest rob Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 terrible event. sincere best wishes to all affected.

Leopolis Semper Fidelis Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 A train was on the Midland Railway Line west of Christchurch, close to the epicentre of the earthquake at the time it struck, and stopped a few yards short of this... Damaged_Railway_Line_West_of_Christchurch.bmp
