I love a long ash on the end of the cigar, but inevitably, if it gets too long, it ends up in my lap, lol.

If you need therapy Wilkey...then so do I. I'm in your camp. I've developed a slight obsession some say with just letting the ash grow as long as possible, and letting it drop on its own. Sadly if is oftentimes, on my shirt, lap or foot. I mostly smoke on my front porch or back patio, so if some ash hits the floor, no biggee. Of course if I'm at aa B&M. lounge, or buddies house, I am more mindful of my ash. I let the ash hang on for several reasons. First, I find that my cigar burns cooler. Two, once the ash comes off the burn gets wonky, or will sometimes go out. Three, sometimes the flavor profile changesm, and not for the best. From reading the other posts here, it seems like others have experienced what I have. I know that touching up a cigar is not big deal, but I hate doing it.

I think one reason I don't find dropping ash on myself to be terribly off-putting is the fact that cigar ash is essentially odorless. Unlike the uber-stinky butts, a tray full of ash is not at all offensive.

If outdoors, on a still, clear day, I let the ash drop off of its own accord. Quite often more than half of my cigar has been smoked before this happens. While indoors, I prefer to tap the ash into a tray and I've become rather good at anticipating when this should be done (in other words, I try to keep the ash on for as long as I can).
