MontrealRon Posted July 21, 2010 Posted July 21, 2010 Gifted by a friend, so no box code. Was very recently purchased, so probably 2010 production. Didn't take photos, as I was not expecting to do a review. Cigar looked lovely, with a smooth colorado wrapper. Liked the shape and size, great for a weeknight smoke. Weight and density felt good, and construction was impeccible. Great draw, and perfect burn throughout. Too bad it had no taste whatsoever. It reminded me of nothing so much as a fancied-up Guantanamera, like a terribly ugly person in designer clothing. I took this thing down to the last inch, waiting for something to happen, wanting to give it a fair chance to prove itself. I ended up with a mouth that felt dirty, as if I had just smoked a cigarette. I'll take a peso cigar, any time, over one of these. It almost makes one believe the fanciful tales about Cuba importing Nicaraguan tobacco, except that Nicaraguan cigars usually have more character than this. Score : 60 Potential for improvement : 0
cigcars Posted July 21, 2010 Posted July 21, 2010 I'm really puzzled at so many put downs of this cigar. I thought it was quite nice
MontrealRon Posted July 21, 2010 Author Posted July 21, 2010 I'm really puzzled at so many put downs of this cigar. I thought it was quite nice Believe me, brother, I lit up this cigar with no preconceptions. I was told it was rather light, but that is no problem for me, as I really enjoy both Fonsecas and Flor de Canos. Both those marcas, though, have very distinct flavours and real character. The Regata had as much flavour and character as a low-end Dominican. Tasted blind, I would never have guessed this was a Cuban cigar. As to your experience with them, I can only wonder - did I get a dud? is there such great variation from cigar to cigar, or box to box? do some examples actually contain ligero or even seco? do you perhaps also smoke and enjoy cigarettes? I know that, in order to render a fair judgement, one should smoke many examples, from different boxes, and at least one full box, over some time. I cannot bear the thought, so let someone else be the judge; my review only pertains to the one example that I smoked.
jman Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 I like this cigar, I thought it was good. You get what you pay for, its cheaper than the regular Montee line
cubanmule7 Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 You know I picked a couple of these in Sao Paulo 4 months ago and let them marinate in the humi for a few months. On halloween I gave one to my neighbor who loves Monte #2s and he really enjoyed it. I waited a few more weeks to smoke the other one and I'm almost embaressed to say I liked (not loved) but really liked it. Before I smoked it I read a few reviews that were very negative so I knew going in not to expect much...but overall it was a nice smoke!
Dbone Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Sounds like Habanos inconsistencies strike again. Thanks for sharing your time with this cigar Ron
Daidemo Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 I rarely bash Cuban cigars but Monte Open Series is a shame for premium cigars.
cubanmule7 Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 Which one did you have? I had an Open Regatta. Yeah maybe there really bad and maybe one out of one hundred is good......I shoulda played the lottery that day! Damn!
