FlyingFossil Posted June 24, 2010 Posted June 24, 2010 Well today I purchased one of the LG wine cellars, as I been convinced by several members that it maybe the best way to keep your cigars in top condition. Was planning a wooden humidor with all the trimmings till I got the price So I bit the bullet and got one of those LG 81 bottle cellar, well it’s not the cheapest but it seemed that it had the size I needed to make a great humidor . So now to sift through several threads to see what the hell I have to do to make it the best Storage facility for my cigars. Also I have been looking at a couple of electronic units for the humidity contro,l one is the Hydra LG Humidifier, it seems like a reasonable unit to maintain humidity for the size fridge I got ( suggestions here will be welcomed and very appreciated ) or maybe Cigar Oasis II XL not sure what would be the correct one to purchase as I have to work out the interior size when its delivered and see What would be the best on or should I say more efficient one if you have experience with either one Suggestions, advice and other thing are very welcome
Kangaroo495 Posted June 24, 2010 Posted June 24, 2010 Got a wine fridge not too long ago. It's a 28 bottle volume. Just put two pounds on beads in there and it's been working like a charm ever since. Haven't ever switched it on though.
MoneyPit Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 Keep us posted, I'd like to know how it works out for you. I've been putting off investing in one, been spending all my money on cigars instead...
Ken Gargett Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 we had a recent offer in parts of oz with penfolds wines where if you bought a mixed half dozen, which you could get for about $120, you could buy a vintec wine fridge for $150, instead of the usual $700. brilliant deal. i've one for wine and one for cigars and they are working superbly.
rp99pts Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 Is that a thermoelectric wine fridge? The compressor type suck all the humidity out when they turn on, unlike the thermoelectric ones. I used to have an Oasis XL as well. Just make sure u have an additional hygrometer for the digital readout on the Oasis is usually off which will throw off ur setting. I prefer the Heartfelt beads. They work very well and are not that expensive...
FlyingFossil Posted July 4, 2010 Author Posted July 4, 2010 OK so far the ploy is as thus... Got the wine fridge delivered, so now to see where I stand with all the modifications if I can actually do them or alter in some way to control the settings. (Not very savvy when it comes to electronic gadgets) 1) I’ve got some beads to see how that goes (yet to be delivered) 2) Got some Spanish cedar planks to fit in the fridge to maintain a steady absorption and more control (I may make some shelfs/tray with them instead of using the metal shelfs that come with the fridge not sure as yet) 3) Got a really good Hygrometer with all the bells and whistles to make sure nothing goes wrong (I will have 2 of them one above and one below) This is the hydrometer http://www.extech.com/instruments/product....&prodid=177 So far the fridge has been aerating and washed clean,so now just waiting on the delivery of then missing items and the plastic smell to go away Then to get some cigars to store
Deemancpa Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Question: I have a 28 bottle Cooler/Cellar. Can I use the bottom for wine and the top for cigars?
BeeStinga Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Question: I have a 28 bottle Cooler/Cellar. Can I use the bottom for wine and the top for cigars? Biggest issue is humidity in those (I would suggest). If it holds fairly stable then won't be a problem. Depends also on what temp you have cellar at. So the potential problem is large swings in humidity can cause damage to cigars. I have only boxed cigars in a large Liebherr Wine Cellar together with wine (which is compressor not thermoelectric/peltier driven as other posts mention pros/cons). However in my environment ambient humidity is naturally 65 to 70% without any beads etc so is fairly suitable. In a more arrid climate this may not be true. I dial the unit temp at 15 degrees as these are not long term aging wines, which you might want a hair cooler. In practice the temps in the unit are actually 15 to peaks of 17 (average of 16 degrees mostly) degrees celcius. This is acceptable to me for both the wine and cigars - there are different schools of thought though.
Deemancpa Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Thanks for the response. I'll have my wife help me drink two cases, then add a couple of bottles to appease the wife, then have all smokes in there. Coolers are so cheap, I'll buy another just for my sticks. D

OZCUBAN Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Also I find some empty cabs in there help suck up a bit of moisture ,don't know if it works ,but it looks better OZ

Most units that you can find out there are only about +/- 1%.
