FlyFishingDude Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Between work and nothing else, I finally had some down time to fish and travelled to the San Juan river in New Mexico for some fishing.
Ken Gargett Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 nice fish. i would have assumed that new mexico would be too warm for trout? obviously not. and the exact type? it looks a lot like a brown but there is also enough colour in some shots to suggest rainbow, or is this one of those we don't see out this way?
thechenman Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Nice catch...I've been noticing more and more people at the brook across from my house fishing for brown trout this year. Haven't heard of any big catches yet though.

All the fish are rainbows in the pictures, there were a few browns but I didn't take any pictures of them. This particular river is a pretty famous tailwater that gets a constant 46 degree discharge from Lake Navajo.

tucomapache Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Nice Trout, when I lived in New Mexico I fished the rio grande a lot just south of Taos. Also Elvado, Herron and Eagles Nest were cool lakes to fish for trout. Thanks for sharing...

You're welcome Ken. Not being a biologist I can't comment on the colouring scheme but I've seen much lighter and then much darker fish pulled from the same river. I have also seen rainbows with such vivid green and red colouring that it's stunning. I would suspect it has something to do with type of water, diet and bottom composition that gives them different colours but don't hold me to that. Also I suspect lacking in photography skills would contribute to not rendering a proper representation of the fish........... Do a quick internet search for leopard trout in Alaska and you'll see what I mean, simply amazing.
