anacostiakat Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 I was gifted a '98 Trini Fundy on friday from a good friend. Saw no reason in keeping it and decided it burn it after a tiresome friday. The cigar started of with an initial woody and burnt tobac flavor. But it quickly changed after a few sips. The change was to a vegetal, mushroom dank woodsy combination. It migrated along the way showing decadent flavors with great burn and plenty of smoke. I paired it with a nice Oliver Hill Shiraz which went quite well with it. I am sorry that I didnt do a full review but it would have gotten in the way of my experience. It made my week. Do you ever have that smoke that makes your mouth water? So tonight I decided to pull out one of my 06 Fundys just to see how it would match up. Well as you can imagine the 06, while starting off as a fine cigar is a shadow of the depth that it's older brother was. There are fleeting nuances of what the '98 was. Started out very bland but at around the 1/3rd mark showed some woodsy/earthy depth. Surprising actually. As I thought it was gonna be a dud. While muted in comparison that woodsy/shroomy/earthiness was evident. Nose picked up some tannins and pepper about half way. More vegetal at about the 2/3 mark. An enjoyable cigar that I think will improve but honestly I would be surprised if it could even approach the depth of the '98. Which I believe are classic Trini cigars. It is about half of it's older brethern at best. Paired it with a burgundy. I cracked this box because I thought it was worthwile to see what the difference would be. And to report on it. I also plan on gifting one to my buddy so he can see the difference as well. I would be very curious to know what current production is like as I have not acquired any. Thanks, Jim
mbrody Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Jim, I'll be sparking an 08 sometime in June and will report back.
khomeinist Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 98 Fundadores are amazingly complex. Enjoyed your review, sans the Shiraz pairing. The 06 cigars still need years. But, I like young trinidads. That is why the gods invented the Coloniales and Reyes lines!! Way to smoke a gift and not hoard! Well done sir.
jquest63 Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Nice review! Just finished an 07 Trini Coloniales with morning coffee. It was splendid, only complaint was it needed to be relit twice. Licorice predominates, with mushroom, wood and sweet hay dancing in and out. Will have to fire up a Fundi soon to see how they are progressing.
thechenman Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Thanks for the review. I've never had a Trinidad Fundadores from 98...only 08, but IMHO...the 08s are spectacular. Maybe I should make a point of it to never smok a 98.
MontrealRon Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Great review! I've heard nothing but praise concerning the '98 Fundys, though I have never had the good fortune to try one. It is still possible to find them on the market, but at around $650/24, they are beyond my reach. Let's hope that recent releases will eventually at least come close to those classic smokes!
ChiTownHuck Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Very cool to do the comparison. Thanks for the review!
