Danashan Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Hi all, I would like to get some ideas what to try in corona gorda, the vitola I absolutely adore. Just to give you an idea of my current preferences, if it helps, I am absolutely gorging myself on Padilla Dominus Corona Gorda as of late. I've tried other vitolas in the line, but found that CG is by FAR the best for my taste. Another NC I really like is Illusione CG:4. Both cigars are pure class, IMHO. Previously, I have also smoked through about a box of Padilla 1948 CG that were supurb, but it seems the vitola was discontinued. So far I was only able to find that Punch Punch is a CG, which is encouraging, since Punch PC is my favourite CC so far. Anything else you may suggest, specifically something I do not need to wait 5 years to enjoy? Thanks for you time, Danashan
hoyopr Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 RyJ Ex #3 & Punch Royal Selection #11 if you can find some from 06 or 07 these are smoking well now.
Colt45 Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 In my opinion, the Hoyo epicure No.1 are fairly approachable when young. If you can wait three to five (or find a box with age), the Upmann Magnum 46 is a fave of mine. While not technically a corona gorda (a francisco) but in the same family at 44 ring, the Bolivar Corona Extra just may be the best bet both young and with age. I don't know how these will compare with your NC preferences. I've not smoked any of the Padilla cigars, but have smoked a couple of Illusione CG-4s over the past few months. I find them to be fairly one dimensional - typically earthy and white pepper spicy to the point of being out of balance, at least early on.
MPS Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Do yourself a favor and get a box of Rafael Gonzalez Coronas Extra with a couple years of age on it.
khomeinist Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Juan Lopez Sel. 1: all-time fave San Luis Rey Ser. A: smooth Cohiba Siglo IV: considered the best by many H Upmann Mag 46: very complex, woody, excellent Trinidad Coloniales: close enough in size. Another all-time favorite why the Partagas, Ramon Allones, and Vegas Robaina lines do not have CGs in current production is beyond me. Great vitola.

khomeinist Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Lol. These have been very hit/miss for me over the years. You have a good year/boxcode I should look for?
SpeedyGonzales Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 A great vitola! Mag46 – a classic if aged for a couple years. Punch RS11 – powerful & loads of flavor. Partagas Serie D No.3 EL 2006 – great and even better than the D3 EL´01. Siglo IV - best Cohiba imho. Just ordered a box of RyJ Ex#3 – nice roasty flavors. Would like to find some ERdM Gran Coronas or Punch Super Selection No.2. Forget about Punch Punch and Juan Lopez. Greets, Speedy
Gumball Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 I second the Bolivar Corona Extra in Cab 50 which is really great after a few years of aging !

I've not experienced one that was out of balance, but did find that it becomes so if you smoke it fast. This one really needs to be sipped to get the complexity out, which is lucky for me, since I actually prefer sipping my cigars as it makes for more relaxed experience for me. Thanks for suggestions.
