The rave reviews of the Gran Reserva has me interested in the Reserva Seleccion release. For the price, the 30 stick box seems intriguing, especially given the fact they now have a few years of age on them.

How are they smoking? What do people think of them? Are they an over-looked "bargain" in today's super-premium market?

These have never blown up my skirt! I know a lot of people who like them but I can't say that I am one of them. I have a few left and would not consider re-buying them even at 1/4 their original price! I could care less about what the cigar was supposed to represent if I don't like smoking them. I would have to look to see if I have '02's or '03's. - Piggy

The search button is your friend, lots written here about them. Personally I think they are one of the best deals out there and have been for some time. I have multiple boxes and rationing them slowly. At the prices now you really cant go wrong. Look for Jan/Feb 03 boxes as the 02's are all but gone at this stage. I have had both late 02 and early 03 boxes and dont detect a huge difference between the two. Superb aged Cohibas.

Ny only experience is a couple of the Reserva Piramides. I thought they were MUCH better than the Cohiba EL Piramides.

They are very enjoyable and you wont be disappointed. Good value & variety for the price.

they were reasonably expensive at the time of release but have not kept pace (US$570 in havana and A$1900 at certain retailers in oz). i suspect that is more because habanos doesn't keep track particularly well rather than any lack of quality in the smokes. if you look at the prices for the early LE's, they were very cheap, at least in havana. $130 a box for the pyramides - hoyo i think or partagas (one was 00 and one 03, forget which off top of head).

word has always been that the 02s much better than the 03's. i am amazed that they are still around as supply was minimal at the time. did they hold back most of them or have they just kept pumping them out? what is the current price?

i had two boxes - have not touched one and the other was destroyed in the great drowning humidor tragedy of about 6 years ago. i did manage to retreive a few but they have always been very ordinary, minty and metallic. by chance, i tried one of the DC-sized ones, last night. same. minty and metallic. shame as one has the impression that good one should be exciting.

this was what rob had on his site at the time.

"There are some new cigars from Habanos rolling out in the coming weeks. One that we will have in the store in the next couple of weeks is the Cohiba Seleccion Reserva beautifully presented in its own humidified cabinet. This is the first of a host of new release products from Habanos this year and I look forward to bringing them to you as they are rolled out. Here is the press release from those great guys at Habanos (shameless attempt to endear myself).

"La Habana, January 17th 2003, COHIBA SELECCIÓN RESERVA. Habanos S.A. introduces the new special production Cohiba Selección Reserva.

This humidified box contains a selection of 30 cigars:

6 Coronas Especiales

4 Espléndidos

6 Robustos

8 Pirámides

6 Medias Coronas

"Cohiba Selección Reserva" has been elaborated with tobacco coming from the best Vegas of San Luis and San Juan y Martínez, in the Vuelta Abajo producing region. The tobacco filler leaves have been aged for over 3 year’s time before rolling the cigars. This specially aged tobacco liberates even more progressively the unique Cohiba’s flavour and aroma. This production incorporates the Reserva band, accompanying the main Cohiba band, which in this occasion incorporates the name of the brand in golden letters. All of it so as to brighten the presentation of the Selección Reserva. It’s also the first time that the Media Corona Vitola is produced in the Cohiba brand, and it will only be available in this special production. Due to the exclusivity of this Cohiba Selección Reserva, which contains the Habanos’ most outstanding brand, and also because of the meticulous selection of the best Cuban tobacco leaves from Vuelta Abajo finest Vegas, specially aged for this occasion, Cohiba Selección Reserva is bound to be a noteworthy event in the world of cigars. This humidified box will be available in limited quantities in the next weeks, only in selected stores all around the world."

Well it looks like the " I love Fidel" letter I write each month to Havana have paid off because we have been selected to stock this collectors item (…yes I read the letter twice and it was addressed to me). Needless to say, quantities will be small, prices high and profit margins low.

at least he got the bit about prices right.

Didn't love them overall when they first came out, but thought the Media Corona were the best of the bunch. Smoked through two boxes far too quickly, I'm afraid. One left at the bottom of one of the coolers. Been thinking about trying it, but to do so would mean that they are no longer pristine!

Just doesn't sit right with me that there are still so many of these around at these prices. Like, everywhere. Kinda feels like the Great Monte Robusto and Partagas and Cohiba Pyramide Scam of a while back.
