Geo17pip Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 I had to watch this film for a music class I'm taking at my University. The professor had to leave on a mini tour to play drums for some band so he gave us this film to watch and is having us report back to him on what we thought. I think its pretty cool how it takes place in Cuba. There are great shots of the streets, buildings cities and even a cigar factory. Beautiful music too! If you havent already seen this film, light up a cigar and enjoy. You can watch it here on hulu http://www.fancast.com/movies/Buena-Vista-...ial-Club/videos

Geo17pip Posted January 29, 2010 Author Posted January 29, 2010 Just finished watching the film while smoking a San Cristobal El Principe. If your into music wow what a good film, it also makes you appreciate how lucky we are.

Kangaroo495 Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Agree, it's a birlliant film. I absolutely live for this music. Have seen BV a few times in Moscow. BTW, Ry Cooder is the slide-guitar guy right?
puros71 Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Buena Vista Social Club is a wonderful movie. Most of the artists have branched off and created their own projects over the years. In October of 2009 my wife and I had the oppurtunity to meet up with Omara Portuondo in San Francisco. My wife is Cuban and knew Omara and her son who is the manager from back on the island. My wife and Omara:
stargazer14 Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 I have not seen this but have wanted to. Thanks for the post, it will be on my 'next' list. And as a guitar player, i love Ry Cooder.
Gursey Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 I was fortunate enough to watch Eliades Ochoa play in Habana.
puros71 Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 I was fortunate enough to watch Eliades Ochoa play in Habana. Great picture , I love Eliades Ochoa's music. When I was in Habana in 2001 I was going to see Compay Segundo at the Hotel Nacional, but I got caught up. I get pissed at myself for missing that concert. Now that Compay passed away a few years ago.
android Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 I'm going to check it out tonight....thanks for sharing the pic's gents.
bassman Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Buena Vista's bassist, Orlando Lopez, released an excellent album named Cachaito a few years ago. Highly recommended. Sadly, he passed away last year.
Ken Gargett Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 absolutely fantastic film and a must for anyone going to or interested in cuba. and if you go, most weeks, the national hotel will have a performance by musicians that are either left or associated. great fun.

Now that Compay passed away a few years ago. Hi Puros, I'm sorry to hear that you missed Compay Segundo on your trip. Here is a photo of Compay and myself taken in 1999 at the 1st Festival del Habano where I had the pleasure of meeting him and spent the whole evening in his presence during the Gala Dinner . The film was not yet out in Europe or elsewhere but he was already well known in Cuba since the 40's & 50's. He was a great singer and musician but above all, a fantastic human being. I will forever remember that evening in Havana and the great time we had until 7 in the morning. He played and sang with his musiciens in the Laguito gardens till late into the morning hours. I wanted to meet up with him again in Jan. 2004 but he had alreadly passed away 6 months earlier.
Colt45 Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Watched it earlier today - thanks again for the hulu heads up. I've been a fan of Cuban music for quite some time - much longer than I've enjoyed Cuban cigars. It's a joyful yet earthy music, and the musicianship....... But if I had a heart, parts of this might cause some stress fractures...... The pics are great guys!

Geo17pip Posted January 31, 2010 Author Posted January 31, 2010 Thanks for the replies guys, i have to choose two of the musicians to write about so ill be sure to include the ones you guys posted pictures of and the stories.
Kangaroo495 Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 BTW, if you're looking for some decent Cuban music from Buenta Vista, I'd recommend getting your hands on "Afro-Cuban All Stars" and "Beuna Vista - Next Generation". Fantastic discs.
Kyrwin Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 Ry Cooder was fined $100,000 fine, later reduced to $25,000, $25,000 by the US government for violating the Trading with the Enemy Act -in which Cuba is the only remaining prohibited country- and the musicians were allowed to accept only per diem fees for their US performances, including At Carnegie Hall Cubans are terrorists, as we all know
