i am more confused than usual. upmanns are not a producer i have looked at a lot, for no specific reason and now i find i will have to rectify that.

i have been reading the terrific reviews about the Tang commissioned Monarchs (which is the term almost everyone bar mel uses but shouldn't that be Monarcas? On the box it is Monarcas?). have finally got hold of a box so very excited - i keep opening the damn things just to smell them - will smoke one shortly after what will be an all-too-brief period of rest.

have been looking in the books to try and find out what i can about these (don't try googling - all you get is reams on ancient chinese dynasties).

Min Ron Nee is uncharacteristically obscure (at least to me). Monarcas are considered very similar to Sir Winstons but come in tubes, yet the photo he shows is a tube labelled monarch, not monarca? monarchs, he seems to describe as identical to Sir W? the photo of the box of monarcas from 96 is again clearly identifiable as monarchs but Nee seems to suggest that if in a tube, then they can't be monarchs. then we have Sir W's?

rudman raves about the monarchs (which he says come in tubes and boxes of 25) but makes no mention of monarcas (are these sort of like superman and clark kent and one and the same and rubes like me are left thinking that they are two discrete cigars?). i understood from discussions with a local (no names, rob) that monarchs didn't come in boxes of 25 and that only the tangs were in boxes of 25. del Todesca notes both Monarcas and Monarchs with the former the more powerful but obviously likes both.

can anyone clarify (no doubt Habanos will have officially discontinued the lot but still be making them)?

Dear Village Idiot.

The H Upmann Monarch is a very fine tubed cigar. I find it stronger than the Winstons.

The H. Upmann Monarca was commissioned by David Tang. Distribution was solely Honk Kong and Canada (David Tang controls distribution in Canada through through PCC). Production numbers are not readily available but estimated at 10,000 sticks. I could confirm for you.

H Upmann Monarca come in SLB Natural (Slide Lid Box) of 25. No other configuration. Nil, Nada, zilcho. All are date stamped NOV 02 from memory.

Possibly the best Churchill of all but I do look forward to you and your 2000 taste buds giving us a review :-D

dear fish fraud,

many thanks but i was not talking only of the david tang (and yes, i know who he is though i did think he was from hong kong, not honk kong) commissioned monarcas (or monarchs, if you prefer). i was curious as to the references found in the texts, though they are obviously far less learned than your good self, which clearly distinguish between the two (or perhaps you are not aware of them because they only go to the good retailers).

all that said, i am grateful for you kindly allowing me to give you vast sums of money for a box and i will post a review shortly. i am assuming that these came from the same source as the on-the-street cohibas?

thanks

I may have missed one of your points through your ramble.

The reviews in Rudmans and MRN are effectively the same cigar...H Upmann Monarchs in Aluminium Tubes and the exact same cigar in Dress Box 25's. I have not seen a dress box of 25's in 4-5 years.

I have seen the AT's labelled H Upmann Monarchs and H. Upmann Monarcas. I have always assumed that the labelling was due to the final markets (Spanish speaking nations Monarcas) and others Monarchs.

No, sadly enough, this is an example of what happens to a couple... once compassionate and respectful of one another, when excessive familiarity breeds inevitable contempt.

I have a dress box of Monarchs from 01 and some Sir Winnies from 03. Pretty similar, with the SW's being a bit more full. Pretty typical H. Upmann profile from my limited experience. Both nice smooth Churchills.

Oh hell fire I almost pissed myself. You two are out the top, village idiot and pardon me for giving you all my money?

I think the Sir Winstons are absolutely nothing special and most I have had were to tight to enjoy. The Tang Monarcas are more fully flavored and more well made.

I hope I did not missspell anything one of you two may rip me a new one.

One cannot overlook the fact that you managed to misspell missspell. Or is it missspell misspell? Hoist by your own petard! :-D

I've wondered at times about the correct title for Monarch versus Monarcas as well. I know Punch used to offer a tubed churchill they referred to as Monarchas as well.

In regards to the difference between a Monarch and a Sir Winston, the Monarchs definitely come off stronger to me, especially if they were tubed. I smoked a '98 Sir Winston last week and it was much lighter than I expected.

I am not the best speller in the world but that extra S thing was on purpose. No one can be as stupid as I act, not even me. Love acting the fool and I have a knack for looking stupid.

I once told a proffesor in college that I was not as dumb as I look. He scortched me in front of the class and said, "No one could be that dumb".:-|

That piece of correspondence made me spill my coffee over the keyboards.

:rotfl::lol::lol2::lol3:

David Tang commisssioned Upmanns in three sizes.

Coronas

No. 2

Monarchs

Expensive but worth the taste. Fuller in body and more flavorful than its counterpart. The difference is that from the start of the cigar, the taste and flavor come out at once.

Ken, believe me when I say you will like this one.:ok::clap:

Wow. I do realize that this is an old thread, however....

After reading that banter between Czar and KG, I can't help but having this "hurt child" feeling. You know, kind of like Mommy and Daddy are yelling at each other across the table, and you don't know whether to eat your food, cry, pee yourself, or sneak away to your room.

Please - Mommy and Daddy, quit fighting. The kids don't like it.
