Been thinking about this for a while...

A few months ago on my birthday, I ventured outside to enjoy a cigar with my old man and my uncle after having a very swell birthday to that point. I took outside a stick of my favorite cigar, the Sancho Panza Sanchos, and proceeded to light up. My father, I had given a HDM Double Corona, that I had actually bought for him months ago a part of a Father's Day gift, but had stored at my place because he has no humidor. My Uncle.....well lets just say he prefers the "naturalness" of Backwoods "cigars". As I finish lighting my Sanchos, I look up to see my Dad running the lighter up and down the entire length of his cigar, charring the vast majority of the wrapper. The Sanchos nearly fell from my mouth :thumbsdwn: as I speechlessly watched the silky wrapper char up as he coated the cigar with flame, before he finished by lighting the end and taking a puff. He then called it a great cigar.

Now, he doesn't smoke CCs, or even Cigars in general too often. But he's definitly had his share of cigars over the years. Also, he had had a wee bit more than I had to drink for my birthday, so he was reasonably in the bag by that point. But still......I didn't know what to say, i was shocked beyond belief....who could do THAT to a CC?

My question is - was lighting the wrapper of a cigar in such a way before actually smoking it....at all..anywhere...some sort of custom before enjoying the smoke? Or was it truly as astonishing a faux pas as I thought it was?

should mention - my Sancho that night was the first CC i've ever had that was completely plugged. Being my birthday, I was pretty disappointed, so I cracked open a box of SC Murallas recently purchased, and smoked one of those instead. Much better....

Cut him a break.......in an inebriated state I have sometimes missed the foot of the cigar...repeatedly...when lighting. Those suckers can move :thumbsdwn:

Along with rinsing cigars, I've never heard of charring them either.

So long as you don't bring the lighter in too quickly and take off an eyebrow, don't feel too bad about it rob :thumbsdwn:

I have read that in the past cigar smokers used to run the flame along the length of the cigar to burn off the gum they used to use to hold their smokes together. Apparently it gave off a foul odor if it was not burned off first.

I used to work with a guy that would LICK the entire length of the cigar before smoking it. I'd rather hang out with your dad. And BTW, I was saving a SPS for 9 years in my humidor, only to find out that it too was plugged! Never again!

Lol, maybe he did have just a lil too much to drink. ;) Hehe, idk, though, it could be some sort of weird old custom.
