NEW HOTEL VENTURE TARGETS U.S. TOURISM

Cuba may be gearing up to welcome U.S. tourists for the first time in 47 years with plans for an exclusive Havana hotel.

Industry sources told the Daily Mail of London that The Hemingway Hotel, a Chinese-Cuban venture, is being developed with an eye on the U.S. market. According to sources, who did not wish to be named, the 600-room hotel will be built on the grounds of the sprawling Hemingway Marina, just west of Havana.

Renovations are already underway at the marina -- named after author Ernest Hemingway, who lived in Cuba for many years -- with the expectation that American cruise ships will soon be coming to the island.

The U.S. trade embargo and travel ban to Cuba has lasted since just after the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, and was stepped up by George Bush during his presidency. President Barack Obama has said he wants improved ties between the two countries.
