bolivr Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 You Go Girl !!! Landlady transforms pub into 'smoking research centre' in legal loophole so customers can smoke indoors http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11...s.html?ITO=1490
zuma Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 very clever... and, look, the landlady is a non-smoker who acknowledges the rights of smokers... she has "common" sense, indeed an endangered breed of people!
sounddust Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Brilliant! However, I would expect the government to act with amazing speed and initiative on this issue which somehow affects the good people of Barnsley(i.e., yet another absolutely legal challenge to the status quo of mental retardation). It's amazing how the countries with the longest and finest traditions of smoking(not to mention freedom of choice) are fast becoming havens for slow-witted, self-righteous twits who intend to impose their own perceptions on everyone, with little or no room for compromise or understanding. Fight the good fight.
maalouly Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 What a great idea! People who live in Australia do you think that's possible in our country?
bolivr Posted May 17, 2009 Author Posted May 17, 2009 What a great idea! People who live in Australia do you think that's possible in our country? It would be interesting to see maalouly. I am not that familiar with the legislation which I think in entirety is all tiers, federal, state and local. The laws with the most teeth I gather would be the state laws and they vary a bit throughout Aus. Local laws are bad enough - we are not allowed to smoke on the beach here for crissakes which can land you a shire infringement of about $100. If not a 'research centre' then maybe some other avenue. I will take a look as a bit of a hobby.
El Presidente Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Up here smoking bans on beaches are only between the lifesaving flags. They don't even enforce that. The key element where the nazi Lobby has snookered business is staff heath & safety (indoor) and passive smoking (outdoor). Smokings version of Speakeasy's are springing up everywhere but they are expensive member only ventures. Still, it is nice to see the fightback underway.
maalouly Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Same in Sydney Rob, you can't smoke between the lifesavings flag. In regards to member only bars there is one in melbourne but I stil can't get my head around it andhow they can be allowed to smoke inside. The reason why there is a ban in the first place is for staf health and safety, so even if its' members only you will still have employees serving unless you say they are not employees they are members and they are working for a fee? I just think it'll be a dream come true the day the government will allow cigar lounges to re-open and we can smoke inside once again! I only wish the government seperates between Cigarettes smokers and Cigar smokers.
bolivr Posted May 18, 2009 Author Posted May 18, 2009 Aus members may find the page here useful. It summarises the smoking bans by State (have to scroll down a bit) It pisses me off that most states exempt high roller rooms in casinos. Somehow the 'health and safety' of employees in these rooms is different to my local pub? http://www.smokefree.org.au/sfv_browse.asp?ContainerID=1572 As it turns out it may not be too difficult after all to set up a 'smoke-easy'. Just need a residential property, rented would be ok. Membership would split the costs of rent, utilities etc. BYO drinks or a bar levy. If there is a bar it is staffed by members on a roster, so no employees. Not for profit organisation. Maybe a system of reciprocal rights for members from other states. Just a thought. One thing I noticed is that vehicles are exempt from being smoke free so how about a big bus fitted out nice for members use With the FoH logo on the side of course It gets cold down here and smoking outside is just not comfy.
asmith Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Thats tough on all those smoking rules. I should tell you guys about where I work, its fantastic, the boss isn't worried about anyone's health least of all his own. He smokes and drinks on the job and encourages his staff to do the same. That is how we have gotten around the rules we created our own little country, its called Club Czar!
smk819 Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 We are lucky that we can smoke at Indian casinos. Some however will let cigarette smokers smoke anywhere and restrict cigar smokers to a small room with a bar. There are some that are cigar friendly and have better facilities for cigar smokers.
Taino Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Soon they are going to start banning hamburgers and god knows what else! Good for this woman lateral thinking!
