Northshore04 Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Earlier today I had a Monte #2. Tight draw but the typical MC2 flavors. The strange part though was how salty the wrapper was. Reminded me of a potato chip. And it never let up. Stayed the same the entire way through. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone might know what might have caused it. I've never run across it before.
Colt45 Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 I'm not exactly sure what you mean by a salty wrapper, but I'll assume you mean salt as a flavor component. In that case, I've had many cigars exhibit salt spice, but from memory, none that kept it all the way through. It would usually show early and dissipate, but I've also had it in other segments during smoking. I'll ask the cliché questions of what you might have been eating / drinking immediately before or during, but tend to doubt it would have that kind of impact.

Even before lighting it up the heavy salt was there. And I hadn't had anything to eat/drink for a while before the smoke so it couldn't have been related to that. What's funny though is that I've had about 6 from the same box before this one and none of them exhibited the same flavor/taste.

b0rderman Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 I get a slightly salty tasting wrapper from time to time, usually wears off or at least mellows out...really not liking Colt's hypothesis , PLEASE someone toss out another one, preferably one that has to do with fermentation or sumptin'
Guest robustog Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 I don't have a clue there.Other than a very sweaty roller............ Hopefully it was from the thighs of a virgin!

I smoked three Sancho Panza vitolas this last week and all three had a subtle salty taste in their profile.
Northshore04 Posted May 6, 2009 Author Posted May 6, 2009 I smoked three Sancho Panza vitolas this last week and all three had a subtle salty taste in their profile. The salt of the MC2 was anything but subtle. More like in your face. Other than that it was still an enjoyable smoke.
jevb Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 The salt of the MC2 was anything but subtle. More like in your face. Other than that it was still an enjoyable smoke. I bought a box of 10 monte 2s recently. its 06 stock and the wrapper when smoking is actually quite bitter. If I hold the cigar in my mouth and then run my tongue over my lips it is quite disturbingly bitter. Upon further investigation I noticed that if I just touched the end of the cigar with my tongue it was extremely bitter. It stayed that way for the duration of the cigar.... I've smoked two of them from the box, both the same and my father smoked one and found the same thing... other than that if I avoided licking the cigar (lol not that difficult...) it was a fantastic smoke In fact I took a few pics and notes on the one i smoked the other day, I'll get em up here on the forum
Ken Gargett Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 very disturbing and yet very intriguing. i would have left it at very disturbing.
rfenst Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 My friend and I both smoked Monte #2s (FEB 2009) from the same box today. Slightly salty taste was definitely there to begin. No construction or burn issues at all, but we both felt the cigars were decidedly underwhelming. Smooth, yet no real flavour to speak of, other than tobacco. These cigars were NOT "on". I did not sense that they ever could have improved with real ageing. I am, however, admittedly a CC noob. The last one I smoked with about 2 years on it was definitely "on". Personally, I would have been much more pleased with a NC instead...
Northshore04 Posted May 29, 2009 Author Posted May 29, 2009 I've had a few more from that same box (Jan 08 I believe) and none of them had the salt issues of the one that inspired my post. Just an abberation I guess but I still have no clue why.
