Ken Gargett Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 This is an excellent and timely thread as I'm heading to Lisbon in ten days or so. I am just beginning to understand what I might be looking at. Thanks to all. if you can get up to oporto, don't miss it. fantastic city and this is home to port. much less focus on it down south. also, try some of the top reds from the duoro. fabulous.

Too bad for me but since we're going to be there only three days, I doubt if we'll get out of Lisbon. Now that you've mentioned them, I'll look for the duoro reds. Are these the wines from the private estate "quintas" ?

Are these the wines from the private estate "quintas" ? quite a few of the port houses from there have ventured into table reds, and even a few whites, in recent years (no doubt always doing something but the quality has skyrocketing in recent years). you do see some of them exported.
FireDigger Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 Hi Ken, got another newbie question for you (or anyone else who knows the answer). What does the white mark at the bottom of vintage ports mean? I know it's so people know which way the bottle is kept up, but how does that affect the drinking of the port? Thanks ahead of time.
