JMH Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 I'm going to be up at the gold coast late november/early december on schoolies, and thought that if oppurtunity permits I might take a little trip down to see the new czars shop. I've never been to Brisbane before, so I don't really know where it is, or how far it is from the gold coast, so is this feasible or not? I'm guessing that it would be a bit of a trek.

It is only about 1.5 hours from the coast. If you drive like you mean it, you could do it in an hour. Just follow the Big signs to Brisbane. And then just go to Bowen Hills. Do it, it is a great easy drive. The question should be what are you doin at schoolies?????? Ross...
jay8354 Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 » » The question should be what are you doin » at schoolies?????? » » Ross... I think that will be obvious... My thoughts would be what is JMH doing at schoolies with cigars????
JMH Posted November 4, 2005 Author Posted November 4, 2005 » The question should be what are you doin at schoolies?????? » » Ross... Celebrating finishing school is what I'll be doing. I'm flying up, so I won't have a car. I can't even drive anyway. Not that I'd be sober enough during that week to step behind the wheel of a car. If I can find some sort of bus that goes straight to Brisbane I might give it a go. I'd love to see the new shop. And jay, how can I party without any habanos? :-D

Then grab the Train to Brisbane. this will take you striaght to the city and should go straight to Bowen Hills, which is about a 5min walk away from the new shop. Ross...
Ken Gargett Posted November 6, 2005 Posted November 6, 2005 jmh, it is many years since i was at schoolies and i think it much more regulated now (and anyone my age within miles of it is going to be arrested) but it was always a lot of fun. it is about an hour up the road to get to brizzy from the gold coast. getting to the helensvale train always strikes me as being as much trouble as getting to brizzy itself. lot depends on what part of the coast you be - do you know? i would think that hopping on a bus at surfers was just as easy. that time of year, you'll also find a heap of people going back and forth and if you ask about amongst your fellow attendees, you probably jag a ride.
JMH Posted November 6, 2005 Author Posted November 6, 2005 I'm in a place on Whelan St which is supposedly around 250m from the town centre. I might try and find a bus or something. Apparently they have a few running to various attractions like dreamworld, so hopefully there'll be one that runs to brisbane. I wonder what the czar courtesy shuttle bus is doing that day ;-) Yeah it's getting a bit more regulated now, but it still isn't too bad. Isn't the mayor of surfers an old pro swimmer or something? I read in the paper last year about how he was vowing to clean up the town and that sort of stuff. Luckily for me I can't smoke, snort, or pop, and I'm 18, so I don't have much to worry about from the cops. Thanks for your help ken.
Ken Gargett Posted November 6, 2005 Posted November 6, 2005 you should have no trouble where you are. and the mayor is surfers is ron clarke, former olympian. he set 18 world records, six of them over the Olympic distances of 5000m and 10000m and carved huge chunks from many other "lesser" distances such as 3 miles and 6 miles. he also carried the flame into the stadium in melbourne in 1956. i think that he ran at '56 (not sure about '52), '60, '64 and '68. won medals, tho not gold. he once took 36 seconds off a distance world record, not even hackett or thorpe have done that. one of the all time great athletes and certainly our greatest in many respects. so sort of an old pro.
JMH Posted November 6, 2005 Author Posted November 6, 2005 He sounds like a pretty impressive guy to say the least.

Ken Gargett Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 i meant one of our greatest athletes, not one of our greatest politicians - that is a very small club. in fact, i can't think opf a single member. » » you should have no trouble where you are. » » and the mayor is surfers is ron clarke, former olympian. he set 18 » world » » » certainly our greatest in many respects. » » » Apart from the fact that he thinks the 2billion indy brings in is a bad » thing. » » Ross...

A well kept secret in Australia is the South Australian equivalent of Schoolies which is held in Victor Harbor every year. The scenes of debauchery I've witnessed and yes partook in are too scorching to speak of. One party I managed to crash was like something out of Caligula. Lots of Alchohol and repressed Catholic Schoolgirls.... Oooh happy days :-D
