Guys,

When I first became interested in cigars about 12-13 years ago, THE Cuban cigar at the time was the HdM DC. I remember reading about it being Bill Cosby's favorite smoke as well as being other famous cigar smokers choice as well. What a big stick and that big band as well. At the time it represented to me what a Cuban cigar was all about. As a matter of fact because of this allure it was one of the first Cuban's I bought when in Canada on business. I remember it being $20/stick even way back then, but I didn't care.

This cigar comes to mind currently because of the 100 points it received in CA's most recent edition in their review of classic cigars. But I NEVER hear about it anymore and haven't heard much in probably the last 10 years.

Just wondering, do any of you enjoy this cigar currently? And maybe it's just me, but what the hell happened to it to lose its prominence?

I have heard people mention that DCs in general are less popular as there are fewer places and less time to smoke now. Could be a reason for a decline . . .

I have one box from 07 that was one of my initial purchases ever. Only smoked one so far and I don't recall it being anything too impressive. Course I also think it was immediately after being shipped and on a 40 degree blustery day in march/april. Plus it was one of the first cc's ever and I had this misconception that "strong and spicy" were what the standard is. Got a poker game in the next few weeks, maybe I will revisit and if so I will report back with my thoughts.

The HdM DC is currently my favourite Prominente...I find it a unique smoke combining a wonderful complexity with a gentleness of aromas. It is not focused on strenght, which I appreciate, and it is a truly first class Habano.

This is a cigar which really benefits from a lot of time down. It is not because of the Ligero kick (it has none) but because it is blended for ultimate smoothness and discerning complexity.

The market has gone for smaller robust cigars. Robusto/robusto extra/Petit Robusto.

So many more cigars have evolved:

Cohiba Siglo VI/ Monte Edmundo and Petit Edmundo/Partagas P2/Magnum 50 just to mention a few.

The Double Corona Segment has decreased in sales volume year on year. Churchills have taken much of this market and with cigars such as the Sir Winston (glorious) the need to reach for a HDM DC has slowly withered away.

Still, put them away for 5-10 years and you do have a magic cigar.

Hi

the HdM DC is one of my favorites, but you have to give them time. As the president say they need time to reach that perfect smoothness and complexity. If you idea of taste is something that hits you in your face and you can direct pick out one taste/smell, well look away. Here its much more settled, much more milder and complex taste.

Get a box, store it for at least 5 years and then smoke 2-3 every year and you will have something that is just magnificent. This is truly forgotten treasure. When you have reached 2/3 of the box you get another one and you will always have some true treasure in your humidor.

I love pulling one out a summer day, sitting in the arbour where the tree gives some shade and light on of these up. You will have almost 3 hours of pure pleasure. I usually pair it with something mild that dont overtake the taste, water or a mild wine, never Whisky or Cognac.

Its just a perfect cigar, but time is the essence, both storing and smoking.

These were one of my favourites at the start as well. Now, just find them too mild. I'll take a VRDA, Punch DC or Lusi over these anytime.
