I just wanted to share my experience with this cigar with you. It's less about the cigar, and more about the experience and why I was smoking a cigar.

I'm generally not a regular smoker. But damn, do I enjoy a good smoke. On a weekend, after a great meal, with friends, with co-workers, family, after an achievement, or success. Okay, maybe I'm a regular smoker.

To cut to the chase, unless I'm really jonesing for one, I will wait until a necessary moment. I find it an indulgence. Every light up I always think of this amazing photograph of my grandfather and his cousins. It's black and white, they were greasers wearing white T-shirts and flexing their muscles. If it were James Dean, you probably would have seen this photo in a museum collection somewhere. They stood there, smoking cigars. For whatever reason, they felt on top of the world, and I think that's just awesome.

Partagas black label:

I recently undertook a serious venture in life that I've been waiting to follow through on since I was a teenager: To take flying lessons. At the end of my first flying lesson, I lit one of these babies up in the parking lot of the airport. At first glance, this is an absolutely gorgeous cigar. It's black like charcoal, a handsome label, and a glossy-greasy look to it as if it was in a solid gold humidor supplied with holy water. (In my opinion).

The smell was exactly how you would imagine a delicious Partagas. The first touch to the lips tasted of sweet, sweet tobacco.

It had a nice light. Perhaps this particular stick was a little moist still, because it had a bit of a tough draw, but after a few minutes,

and a few puffs, it was butter.

Off the top of my head, I can't remember the distinct flavors, I mostly remember the feeling.

I sat there watching the next aviator go aloft into the cold skies of New York State, and I reveled in how happy I was, and what a great choice I made to celebrate that moment with that cigar.

I smoked it until the flame burnt my lips and loved every second of it.

Until next time,

J

I got one of these in the humi from a good friend. Smells great - will smoke it on a special occasion.

I love the sentiment behind this review - enjoying life and living it up!

I actually don't know this cigar.

In fact, I don't think I've even heard of it. I'm going to have to look it up and see if I can get one to try.

That's what it's all about, my friend.

The Partagas Black is a pretty full-bodied line in the NC Partagas stable. I haven't found them to be particularly noteworthy but at a time like the above, who really cares what cigar you're smoking. :)

If I remember, it was on the inexpensive side. I got it in a 3 pack from J+R. 12.50 for 3 cigars. What a great deal.

I'm still exploring different cigars and finding what I like. Anyone have any recommendations based on my appreciation of this one?

Well,

It's not at all on the inexpensive side but if you like a rich, decidedly sweet profile in a fat, dark cigar, then you must try the Cohiba Maduro 5 line. I'd suggest the small Secretos first simply because they are the most extracted and strongest but also the least costly. And then grab yourself a Cuaba Piramides EL, which I read, also has a sweet core. The Trinidad Ingenios EL is also sweet, rich, and decadent. None of these though, will be as strong as the Party Black. As for NCs, give the Drew Estates Liga Privada series a try. Dark and decadent and occasionally strong enough to rip your head off. Again, not that cheap but really quite good. Sancho Panza Double Maduro would be a good dark stick and very economical too.
