Hello Colorado Members,

FOH Moderator and legendary cigar dissector, Wilkey Wong, will be in Denver from April 1-4, 2009. He tells me his evenings will be free, so I think at least one herf is in order. He will be staying close to the Brown Palace Hotel, so Churchill's is a natural choice of venue. Please respond on this thread if you are interested in joining us for some fine cigars, drinks and conversation.

Cheers,

Dave

I'm really looking forward to the opportunity to meet up with a few fellow FOHers during my trip. I'm going to be in town for a conference of the Society for Research in Child Development and have several posters to present and two labs of talks and posters to attend so I'll be busy. But come the PM, I'll certainly be looking to bust out and engage in some no-child-related activities. :)

See you all there!

Wilkey

BTW, cigar dissection will not be on my mind but smoking some good cigars and forgetting about doctoral research for a few hours certainly will be.

Ok, after consulting Wilkey on his schedule, here's the deal,

Friday, April 3, 2009, Churchill Bar at The Brown Palace Hotel. After-dinner cigars and drinks with Wilkey and I'm buying. We will shoot for 7-7:30 PM as a start time. Let's make it a night to remember. ;)

Cheers,

Dave

Hey Kent,

Sorry I hadn't said hello until now. Trust me we are all newbies compared to Wilkey. You are most assuredly welcome.

Hope to meet you there.

Dave thanks for the greeting!

I will certainly try to make it there and meet some of you. It's really cool a forum like this can bring all types of people together.

On a side note. I've noticed that some forum members have links to their respected websites. For those of you in Colorado I'd like to give you my tip/news of the day from my line of business:

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and the other members of the Federal Open Market Committee stunned the credit markets with their announced plans to buy up to an additional $750 billion of mortgage-backed securities.

Market participants were further shocked by the Fed's plan to buy up $300 billion of longer-term U.S. government debt over the next six months. This event is nothing but mortgage market friendly and virtually assures mortgage interest rates will stay unusually low for an period of time.

So if you are in the market to buy or refinance, this is a ray of sunshine and great news. I can't wait till tomorrow to see where rates on the 30 and 15 year have dropped.

Wilkey and I have discussed this and here's the schedule that was combined from ICC and FOH. All are welcome. Come meet our visitor and some friendly CO locals. Please let me know ASAP if you want to come to Racine's for dinner on Wed so the reservations and table size is correct, not that it'd be an issue at that time to accommodate more.

Wednesday 4/1:

Friday 4/3:

  • Churchill's (at Brown Palace) for Cigars - 7:30 pm

Saturday 4/4:

Wednesday night went well. After picking up Wilkey at the hotel, Peter (physiognomy) and his much better half, Dawn, joined us for dinner (the fish & chips were so-so), and Dave (toasterhead) joined us for a drink. We rolled over to Churchill's and met up with Matt (mhailey) and Tim (Clipper). I smoked a very nice RA Gran Robusto and an Alfredo custom that was good but irritated my throat.

I had a nice time all. Thanks for joining us and thank you all for the gifted cigars, friendship and great conversation. I look forward to seeing most of you and many others later this week.

Hey everyone,

What a great time, meeting Wilkey, Scott, Dawn and Peter. Sorry I couldn't carry on into the night, but I'll get my chance for a smoke tomorrow night. I thought Dawn was a really good sport putting up with us. It was funny; as soon as Dawn got up from the table, four guys who had just met went instantly into non-stop cigar talk mode :cigar:

I plan on bringing a small assortment of goodies to Churchill's for a live box pass tomorrow night; you know, take one you may not have tried and replace it and pass it on. I also have some special gifts for our guest cigar sleuth.

See you all at Churchill's; look for the FOH hat.

Cheers,

Dave

What a great night! It was a pleasure seeing Wilkey and Peter again and meeting new friends Zach, Ray and Glenn. It is clear to me that we have some serious cigar lovers here on the Front Range.

Once everyone settled in, a round of cigar gifting began, and I was blown away by the wonderful aged stock being freely offered. I ended up with Punch RS 11 and 12, Sancho Panza Bachilleres and SLR Serie A, all from the previous century B) Glenn gave me my first Petit Edmundo tubo which looked great. You guys are the best; thank you again.

Right away the conversation flowed easily, ranging from cigar shop talk to favorite stories about friends and family. We had a mini seminar on Islay single malts (Ardbeg) and Jamaican rum (Appleton) both of which paired well with the cigars. Wilkey regaled us with tales from the worlds of forum moderating and forensic cigar investigation.

I had brought two samples for Wilkey to add to his vitolas.net collection. One was a "Partagas Salamones" with a funky shape, a dark greasy wrapper and a pretty good looking band. We concluded the wrapper was probably Dominican maduro. The other (above) was a classic; a 40 Aniversario, barberpole "Cohiba" topedo :o The top band had 4-5 rows of dots and the printing was hideous. I thought the cigar itself was kind of pretty.

I hope to meet up with the gang again tonight, but if not, it was a wonderful experience getting to know Wilkey. I will see the rest of the Front Range herfers for sure in the near future.

Cheers,

Dave
