El Presidente Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 I have a little conundrum. I am finding cigars from 2006 -2008 to be fuller in body/profile (anyone else?). When recommending say a lighter bodied cigar in a Robusto format I would go ERDM Choix Supreme, HDM Epi 2, SLR Regio. So far as I can tell each are now well and truly medium bodied. Likewise in Corona Gorda....SLR Serie A to me was always a lighter style. No longer. The HDM Dieux I had yesterday (07) was Medum/Full. Very nice but far stronger than I have come to expect. What cigars from 2006-2008 would you say are truly "mild"? Fonseca No 1 is Mild/Medium and highly complex. I am however struggling to come up with an arsenal of others along the same lines.....mild and complex.
El Presidente Posted January 21, 2009 Author Posted January 21, 2009 Monte 4 maybe? Rob I would put the Monte 4 strictly in the Medium category but others may disagree.
Guest rob Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Then I'm all out ideas... probably havent ever tried anything lighter to be totally honest.
shortsqueeze Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Here's an idea. Pull up your skirt and torch a Monte 2. Seriously, what about the San Cristobal line? At least La Punta and El Morro. Sancho Panza?
El Presidente Posted January 21, 2009 Author Posted January 21, 2009 I have always put the Rafael Gonzalez, Sancho Panza and San Cristobal in the "Light bodied" category. Recent tastings (past 3 months) of 2007/08 stock however show them to be fuller than previous years....to the extent that they are no longer truly "light". Let me know what you have tried over the past couple of months from post 06 which is "light bodied". If you have a code let me know. The reason for the question is simply to assist those seeking lighter bodied cigars. We like to be accurate when giving recommendations.

shortsqueeze Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 The Cuaba Distinguidos I've had were excellent, tasted of marachino cherries almost. Quite light and flavorful, but they did take quite a few months to come around (they were '05 boxes).
chrisguinther Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 May I suggest an RyJ Exhibicion #4. Light in body but full in flavor. 05 samples are smoking rather well at the moment.
Colt45 Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 I can't recall the last time I smoked what I'd consider a truly light bodied cigar. I favor cigars with a fair to full amount of flavor intensity, which in my opinion, goes hand in hand with body. Personally I feel a light bodied cigar can be complex, but usually will be subtle in flavor delivery. That's just not my cup of tea. Or actually, coffee might be a better analogy - I like a lot of flavor in my coffee as well. A double espresso any time of day or night. And yes, I understand how helpful this has been........

KG, I'm in complete agreement on all points, especially that balance is key. I don't mind delicate flavors in a cigar as long as they are not so subtle in intensity that I feel I'm having to search them out. With espresso, I'll vary the grind from time to time which changes extraction and alters flavor accordingly, but not to the point where it could be called much less than full flavored. The sweet spot for me is when I get a sense of almond liqueur. I love a silky wine that is still dense, with tannin that stiffens the back end, yet you don't notice because they are so well integrated. But I do love all kinds of wine. The biggest turn off for me is when the identity is vinified out of a wine.
Ken Gargett Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Rafael Gonzalez didn't he just beat hewitt?
Ken Gargett Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 KG, I'm in complete agreement on all points. colt, now i know why rob is in such a grumpy mood this arvo. it terrifies him when you and i are in accord. more of it!!

kjellfrick Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 For a lighter bodied cigar with great taste I'd go for a ERdM Grandes de Espagna. For me they fit the description perfectly!
El Presidente Posted January 21, 2009 Author Posted January 21, 2009 colt, now i know why rob is in such a grumpy mood this arvo. it terrifies him when you and i are in accord. more of it!! Grumpy!!! I was Fricken furious! When Lise had her mishap last week I told you she was pregnant ......confidentially. "Not a problem" Ken "Looselips" says. Today on the phone Lisa tells him she is pregnant. "Rob told me" says ken. God forbid you are a POW under interrogation!!!!!!!!!!! You would give up not only name and serial number but coordinates for your division, what you had for breakfast, last cigar, Mothers address, pet hamsters name and whether your morning stool was a floater or sinker!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are as tightlipped as a womens morning tea party!!!!!!!!!!

You are as tightlipped as a womens morning tea party!!!!!!!!!! ahhh, history re-written. you told me (i might add in direct contravention of the original tellee's order not to do so, so bagging me for allegedly the same offence is a bit rich) and i told no one. not a soul. torture could not have got it from me. even surprised myself. then lisa rings to tell me. i'm doing the congrats bit etc. but lisa is not stupid. she twigs i know. i stonewall. i do all i can to protect rob's indiscretion. finally, i say, i'm doing my best here to sound surprised. she laughs a lot. she says she knew rob could never keep it secret. i make no comment. i then ask lisa not to let on to rob that, under the pressure of finally having to acknowledge the truth, despite my decoy tactics, she was aware i knew. so what does she do? runs straight to rob. the three of us are all hopeless. it is an old principle of torts, or was it equity (not flash on either at law school) - don't expect relief if you can't come to the table with clean hands.

What an alliance that could be - like Sidious and Vader. A force of nature. And when you need to get the word out - telephone, telegraph, tell RA.......
Van55 Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Quai D'Orsay I respectfully disagree. See my reviews of Q D'O on the review board. I don't know if you can find them any more anywhere, but La Flor de Cano Petit Coronas are very light in body.

IIRC I found the QDO along with the Fonseca's to be on the lighter side of the spectrum (muted?) Wish I still had a few to revisit.
