I had to work Christmas Day so I decided that I’d postpone my Christmas smoke until after New Year. Today was as good a day as any – better in fact as I finally had a day off, my first one for a month – so I reached into the humidor and took out my last Unicos. This is the last of the Unicos that I bought as a sampler in June last year (no box code I'm afraid but I'm guessing early 2008) – I smoked the rest very quickly and I had to force myself to store this one away so that I could give it some proper rest before smoking it!

This piramide is gorgeous to look at. Bit toothy, lovely wrapper shade, aroma at cold is strong tobacco. I often find that the Vegas Robaina marca can be a bit strong so I chose to smoke this at lunchtime so I could appreciate it more, and have the afternoon to recover if need be!

The cigar takes to flame beautifully, and the first few draws reveal hints of cocoa and an undercurrent of sweet bread. Not as strong as I thought it might be, probably on the mild side of medium actually, but it satisfies nonetheless. Plumes of white smoke, and most definitely pepper through the nose. I like that sensation so I end up blowing through the nose for most of the first third…

Around the half way mark and the cigar has picked up strength a little, but its predominant flavour is still cocoa. Some nut in there too, but mostly I am getting light chocolate. The burn and draw are both excellent and I congratulate myself on managing to let this stick sit for 6 months before smoking it… I really must try to do that more often!

Final third and strength has picked up and unexpectedly has some stewed fruits in there too. A great twist in the tail! Much stronger than the first third but this cigar has been blended well so the crescendo is not overpowering at all.

I would say this is an excellent cigar, which although young is very approachable now. This has got to be one of the best piramides out there in my opinion, and I would recommend it to anyone.

I thought these were 'good' when the box arrived, after a few months they are working towards 'GREAT', I really like these and am looking forward to the second half of my box with a year or two on them.

Nice review.

thanks for the review. My OCT 07 box is probably one of the most promising "lay them down for 2 years and see" boxes in my collection. They smell like a petting zoo and look absolutely great. I smoked one about 8 months ago and it was reeking of potential but very young. Might be time for another.

Thanks for the review - I also enjoy the Unicos. I consider them more a mid body cigar, and have found them to have a dried honey

and light chocolate (as you've mentioned) profile.

Interestingly (to me at least), the last '05 I smoked, a few months back, seemed to be losing it's overall flavor - and I got the sense it was

actually in decline and not going through a maturation phase. We'll see.

Nice work Soltino!

I don't consider them to be powerhouses but when you get a Unicos that it is "just right" they really are magnificent.

Hi all!

Well, after having read Soltinos amazing review on this beautiful cigar, the Vegas Unicos as well as having many of you recommend I try one, I purchased 6 x VR Unicos (Thanks Rob) and finally smoked one last night. I had these delivered on Monday but due to the flu, I wished to experience this beauty to it's full potential once I recovered.

I will not review it in the normal format for I'm just an average bloke that enjoys the experience and after reading such an amazing review like Soltino's, I really don't imagine I'd get close to such a great write up. But, I can tell you the following....

On first impressions when removing this cigar from my Humi, it has an amazingly silky smooth outer wrapper which I have never found on any other cigar thus far, quite unique and it is this alone which starts this experience.

Construction of the wrapper is excellent, good draw and a beautiful oily rich golden brown colour. Once i lit up, cocoa and coffee were the first flavors to hit my taste buds. One third down there were also hints of spice, nut, leather and earth evident, there was also caramel and cedar. The burn was near perfect from the begining and the draw was just nice. The ash was thick and there was huge amounts of smoke which left a gorgeous aroma in the air.

The entire time whilst experiencing this beautiful treat, it had me completely immersed in it's complexity whilst I also had a double shot Glenlivet 15yo.

The evening was perfect outside, nice glass of scotch and a truly amazing Cigar!

Thanks all for your recommendations, I now have a favourite! :2thumbs:

Love the pics as well.

I have enjoyed some quite excellent Unicos of late. Can be very unique amongst piramides in that it is the only one that can develop the deeper bitter chocolate/toasted tobacco tones.

This review has taken me! I am dying to try one now :cigar: I'm still a little new to all this... was thinking of buying/trying a single or should I let one rest in my humidor for a little while first??

I recently finished a very nice box of 01s- medium bodied & very intense cocoa flavor. 03s are waiting to be opened.

Fantastic, I'll keep some of those you listed in mind...

At the moment, I love VR Unicos, Diplomaticos #2, Siglo VI, Monte #2. :cigar:

I might try out the Cohiba Lancero's next.

Mika you are way too kind :D I just try and follow in the footsteps of the masters like El Pres and shrink... seriously though, if you smoke a great cigar it more often than not inspires a great review. I'm glad you enjoyed the Unicos, it really is a good solid smoke... which reminds me, it's about time I bought some more!

Gorgeous pics. @soltino, which hotel were you smoking in?

It's actually the club associated to our housing complex. There is a 'Cigar and Red Wine Bar' where they still allow us to smoke - smoking is banned in the coffee bar where I used to smoke :D

The complex is called Star River, or Xinghewan in pinyin, and they do have a pretty flash hotel in the same place as well. The best part really is that it has it's own golf course as well (only a 6 hole though and way too much water for my dismal golf skills).

You're welcome Soltino. It was your review which inspired myself to order a few from Rob and as stated in an earlier post, they are my new favourites amongst a few others. :D

I guess this is the reason why reviews are so important, so THANKYOU for your review mate, you're up there with the masters like El Pres as far as I'm concerned. B)
