mkz Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Romeo y Julieta Exhibition 4 2007 And yes!! I DO need a better camera... Prelight aroma: Salty grass. Prelight taste: Sweet spice. Draw: Perfect. 1:3 Opens up very agressive with an explosion of spices. Its like an raging bull! Tons of dry spices with a hint of nuts. Cuban chili-nuts? The burn is very uneven and two weak spots are digging down on each side. Already from the beginning this X4 needs help from the lighter. The smoke is quite thick and the ash is white with big flakes. After the tough opening it settles a little bit. Spices are dominant along with a taste that could only be described as sucking on dry nutshells. I cant really tell if its good or not. Another correction with the lighter is needed. More strong spices attacks my mouth... I would say... black pepper. This cigar is no Mr. Nice Guy! 2:3 Some grassy/flowery tastes joins the spice party for a brief moment but after a short while its back to spicy nutshells again. The burn has straightened out for the better. Overall: not very much has changed in the taste. 3:3 The taste is still spicebomb a la nutshell and there hasnt been any significant change in the experience. I cant help feeling a little dissapointed over this specimen. No more Mr. Nice Guy turned out to be Mr. Dull. Overall experience: If you like tons of spices, go for it! I think it lacked complexity and in the long run it got kinda boring. Perhaps a few years in storage could make miracles for this RyJ. Score: 83/100
Colt45 Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 Thanks for the great review. It'll be interesting to see where these are in a couple of years.
DocRKS Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 Romeo y Julieta Exhibition 42007 . Perhaps a few years in storage could make miracles for this RyJ. Tks for the very well presented review... I believe your concluding sentence says it all - this is a magical smoking experience when you light up a well aged and well stored example of this vitola. The boredom/dullness that you reported does in fact dissolve and what emerges is a very flavourful and delicious cigar.
El Presidente Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 Great review on a cigar that baffles me of late. I have had some spectacular examples but over the past 18 months I think that they have lost their way. I struggle to get flavour consistency and I understand your spice bomb analogy.....but the R&J Exhibicion No 4 should not be this way (Exhibicion No 3 is more along those lines).
