El Presidente Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Aroma at cold is fresh sweet pungeant tobacco. Some football socks. Oliy to the touch, well constructed. Draw slightly restrictive. Perfect. Medium full opening. Soft and spicy at the same time. Some uncuaba like fruity edge to the flavour. Likely a sign more of youth than an enduring flavour characteristic. Hints of vanilla at the first ½ inch. Just a tad over medium bodied but white pepper spice through the nose. Good dense smoke over the tongue. Aroma of smoke a mix of pure tobacco and fruit. Nearing the second third. The fruitiness has gone. Very smooth rich cigar with next to no hint of youth. Some coffee coming to the fore. The cigar is evolving at its own pace. Half way point and It is perfectly medium bodied with a sweetened coffee tobacco core. This has been quite a ride to date. The periphery sweetness is back but it drifts in and out. Core of toasted tobacco is there but there is a coffee mintiness (mint is slight and again…drifts in and out). Quite a remarkable cigar as every few minutes it produces something new into the mix. No doubt the youth of the cigar is playing its hand however the quality and complexity is beyond reproach. Last third and she is near exhausted retiring into a toasted tobacco and coffee medium bodied note. Still very satisfying. Beautiful toasted tobacco is so rich. I smoked this oe down to the nub finishing the last few inches as I cooked the team some Duck breasts on the BBQ for lunch. Later on in the afternoon Smithy had a chance to do his first tasting of this Cuaba. He will post a review next week but his thoughts were very similar to mine....impressive. I think we will make our first video tasting on the Cuaba Piramide and Partagas Serie D No 5. The Cuaba Pirimide is a superb cigar. Lets hope it maintains its quality. Right now I would rate it a 92. 5/6 smokerings. There are so many great cigars floating around today. What I will do is release some 2008 EL samplers on Monday so everyone has the opportunity to try them.
Fatshotbud Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Thanks for the great review and bring on the samplers
Tampa1257 Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 For El Presidente to rate a Cuaba above a 80 means that this Piramide is a serious continder!
El Presidente Posted November 29, 2008 Author Posted November 29, 2008 For El Presidente to rate a Cuaba above a 80 means that this Piramide is a serious continder! This and the H Upmann Magnum 50 are the standout new releases of the year. I just want ot smoke more of these Cuaba's from different boxes in order to get a broad gauge. I love the red/brown wrapper
paesano Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Nice review as usual. Thanks for taking another one for the team. LOL
GP012 Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Interesting. I wasn't terribly too impressed with a pre-release, but those could easily be much different.
Moglman Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Nice review Rob. I was actively moving and chatting and anything but focusing on the cigar when I smoked the single I had. It seemed to me to be that the first third was rather confused, then it became quite good until I started having burn problems. I will try more when I can sit and give the cigar the attention it deserves.
bassman Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 The one I've smoked was medium bodied & had a distinct herbal flavor unlike any other cigar I've smoked. Not sure if I liked it or not. Smoked only a week after delivery, I'll let them settle in for a while before trying another. I DID enjoy it more than other Cuabas, but Cuaba is not one of my favorite brands.
asmith Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Later on in the afternoon Smithy had a chance to do his first tasting of this Cuaba. A lot of what I'm going to say mirrors what Rob has already said and I must add that this cigar was a great compliment to the Duck we had for Thanksgiving lunch. Cuaba general throws up cigars that are dressed for success but generally fall flat on their face and you are left standing at the bar by yourself as your friends laugh at you... Opps did I say too much. This Cuaba was superbly rolled, a beautiful oily wrapper that felt great in the hand. The draw was just under firm and right on the money to fully develop the flavours of the cigar. This was starting to look good from the outset. The cold draw was all light chocolate and delicate tobacco. This continued once lit then I pulled out the biggest call of the year. Ten draws into this cigar I claimed to Ayala that is was the second best opening to a cigar I have had all year. Now lets think about that for a moment, there have been some sensational cigars this year, it was second only to the Upmann 50. No acid, no bitterness, all smooth coffee and chocolate with velvety smoke, this was a good cigar, and still so young. Starting out just below medium in strength the Cuaba continued to build throughout the length till the end as a full flavoured cigar. This had a smooth progression through the first third and while developing the sweet creamy chocolate notes subsided to be replaced by a rich aromatic tobacco flavour. This cigar was truly and enjoyable smoking experiences, so subtle and smooth were the changes in the cigars progression it kept you searching throughout for the evolution of flavours. Building through the second third and into the final third that dusting of white pepper just added to the coffee and chocolate. An even burn has always failed me when it comes to Cuabas but this thing was square all the way, and only needed a couple of relights for such a young moist cigar. I would like to try one that had been dry boxed for a couple of days just to see how it may changes its profile. This cigar will be great in 5 to 10; will it change its direction dramatically? I hope not. Rob is on the money with 92, I look forward to smoking this cigar with some age on it when the flavours mellowed to be a superb mid 90s cigar. This cigar is right up there in my top 5 cigars of the year.
Habanos2000 Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 This one sounds great! It's on the wish list
Colt45 Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Thanks for the review, guys. From your reports though, it seems a failure of blend consistency - it actually sounds good!
maverickdrinker Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 I had one of these in Montreal when they first came out and felt it was quite a tasty cigar. Enjoyed it as I walked from the LCDH through downtown MTL. Great construction and very eye pleasing. Was suprised that this was a cuaba as I found it a little stronger than a traditional cuaba. Might be the ring gauge of the cigar. All in all, very impressive cigar. Glad I have a box to enjoy...
Mr. Japan Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Smoked several Cuaba LE from early release to actual box and for me this is a serious cigar. This is on same level or even better than first release of Partagas LE Piramide IMHO. I will Keep these cigars a minimum of 5 years before smoking again. ( I hope do be able to do it)
SirSmokeALot Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 The Cuaba Piramides sound tasty, looking forward to seeing the video tasting
