In your wife's eyes, you would have been in trouble either way. If you were with Tom, your previous track records speaks for itself. Though I would used that as a defense. That your 8 year old have more common sense than you do. As you have mentioned Rob - You are the FUN dad, common sense and fun do not mix together.
