El Presidente Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 My name is Rob Ayala and I am a Fisherman. Saltwater Fly Fishing mostly with Bonefish on a 7 weight my greatest passion. As opposed to Ken, I don't get the guide to cast my fly rod  I own 7 rods and 5 reels and I have just put a deposit on a fishing canoe. It is not that I need a canoe but when Angela has finally had enough and shows me the door......it would be nice to leave with something beside the Montesa
JMH Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 I got hooked last summer, but was busy during the year, so come this summer, I'll be out in full force. I just need to get a new reel for an old rod of my dads, and few trinkets and I'm all set I read an article in either the SMH or the Sun Herald about two guys up near Newcastle who were catching Great Whites 50m off one of the popular surf/swimming beaches up there. They built a special chair (complete with stubby holder) that they'd attach to that ball thing on the back of their landcruiser, and then one of them would stick 1/2 a salmon on a hook, paddle out on his board with the lump of bloody flesh under his chest and then dump it behind the breakers and paddle back in. Keep in mind they were getting bites 1-2 minutes after they chucked the bait in. They were managing to catch sharks up to 2.7m long, and then tagging them and pushing them back out into the water. I still can't decide whether they have balls the size of grapefruits, or are just complete idiots.
JMH Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 Argh, please excuse the 'hooked' I didn't realise what I'd said until I re-read
SlimDiesel Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 I wouldn't call myself a fisherman, but I do enjoy casting and drinking. My buddies and I go out once in a while at night with a case of beer. There are some nice catfish to be had out here in Arizona, too bad I can't catch any.
habanohal Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 MOstly smallmouth and largemouth Bass. The rivers here are filled with smallies. My bigggest catch thus far is in Tenessee, Nashville. A 14.5 Largemouth ,caught on a crankbait. The funny thing is ,my brother and I were fishing off cliffs, not a boat. The next weekend there was a free tourney to the largest fish of any kind caught. It was 3.5 Lbs for $25,000 and a new Ranger boat. Man when I heard that , I hit the roof. I was a week early. I dont fish that much now for every spare time I have is used at the golf course.
jay8354 Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 Got the passion for fishing when my buddies decide for my buck's as day event to go Deep Sea Fishing. It was a great day and between 10 ppl, we had caught around 30 kg of fish. This has started to be an annual event and great fun all around.
CIGARHead Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 I too love to fish. We have an 18' McKee Craft and usually fish inshore. My reel and rod of choice...Shimano thrown on a Star Rod (local rod manufactuerer..but sold nationwide). Been catching some bruiser Gator Trout and the Redfish have been tearing it up too. Funny you say you are getting a canoe Rob. Im looking for a Ganoe Boat...looks like a canoe with a flat back for a motor. We have many creeks to explore and thats where these Redfish and Trout hang. Skinny water, early in the a.m. with a case a beer and a cigar or two... and you can see there tails out of the water scouring for baitfish. Love it!:-D
strayvector Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 I love to fish, but not very good at it. I've always had the theory that fishing is only considered a sport because the time that you spend waiting for a bite is spent thinking about other sports.:-D
GoatLocker Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 I love fishing, salt or fresh. I've had four boats, currently a 21.5' Seaswirl Striper. This has been the worst year I can remember for tuna, but there have been a few yellowtail and assorted bottom fish. There's always next year. I must have at least a dozen poles for saltwater, and a few more for fresh. Another obsession, and one that costs even more than cigars! :-|
smk819 Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 I have been known to stalk a trout, flyrod in hand.
El Presidente Posted October 27, 2005 Author Posted October 27, 2005 Seriously.....we use those as live bait
Bill Hayes Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 I think, once a fisherman always a fisherman. At heart at least. Don't get much time these days. I fished a lot around the Mornington Peninsula area when I was a kid, then moved on to spearfishing when I was in my teens. I miss it badly. Just scuba dive now when on overseas holidays. I have been tempted by Rob's fishing trips up north. But I'd doubt my lure fishing skills would stack up, having learned on hand lines, catching flatheads, whiting and pinky schnapper. Now you need a fishing and boat licence before you can even take to the water in Victoria. I used to skipper our 15 foot half-cabin speed boat out on Port Phillip Bay when I was 13. It was better fun than sitting in this bloody office. ;-)
Maverick Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 Rob, I love fishing. I have never tried Fly fishing, looks like fun. Is the Fishing day still a goer? I have only ever fished standard gear, bass/yellowbelly @ Somerset Dam and moreton bay. Ross...
cf2112 Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 I love to fish, the whitw bass are running now and crappie are biting. I built my house between a lake and a river and fish most evenings with my kids and a good cigar. Smallies are my favorites but any bass will do:-D
dysfunctional Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 I am a fisherman... Mainly bottom bashing or big game..... Record to date is a 280 KG Blue Marlin on 50 lb standup tackle ...fought the fella for 3 hours 45 mins.....at Takabonerate (Indonesia) Other than that usually sailfish on 20 lb line and bottom fishing.... Got a fly rod but keep hooking the back of my ear when practicing so gave up Reels owned still : Shimano beastmaster 80/130 (2) Penn 50 SW Shimano 50 LRS Tiagra Accurate Boss 665 Accurate Boss 210 Accurate Boss 190 Finor 4/0 Shimano Beastmaster 30/50 Abu 7000 and some smaller reels including the fly rod and reel (a 9 wt)
El Presidente Posted October 27, 2005 Author Posted October 27, 2005 Great story Bunker! I remember fndly fishing with my father. I had an insatiable appetite for fishing but more importantly, dad being a quiet man, fishing was an opportunity to spend time with him one on one. Now I fish with my family predominantly with my eldest Ben who is 11. He is posessed. He is an encyclopedia and can recite 95% of every catchable species in Australian waters, their habitats and techniques to use on them. He is also bloody competitive as he takes after his mother  Great times.
Ken Gargett Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 first, you are only getting the montesa if your wife gets a dud family lawyer. second, you fish "predominantly" with your son because you can pay him to back up your lies. 3rd, in all the trips we have been fishing together (and feel free to answer this with a yes or no - and try being honest), have i ever seen you catch a fish? it is always,"they were on just after you left", or "just before" or "i forgot the camera" (how many photos in the top right corner are you with big bonefish?) or "i just released it before you walked around the corner but..." 4th, as you well know, i have never had a guide cast for me for bonefish, or any other fish! 5th, you are welcome at fraser any year - even macho got on to the big tailor this year, so you have a chance. you are so lucky i have no idea how to post photos or this forum would be staring at big tailor for months.

Got to love the disagreement between mates. I have agree with a comment on a different post. You two know each other way too long and behave like husband & wife. :-D
hazleem Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 I wouldn't call myself a die hard fisherman - just a social one with my dad. First started fishing when I was four in Madison, Wisconsin. My first ever catch was a sheepshead and it sure seemed big! You fishermen out there know what I mean, right? Biggest ever fish caught was a baracuda off Langkawi (an Island of west Malaysia). It was close to 5 1/2 feet long. We trawled on a speedboat using a rapala. Good 20 min tussle... Over the years, I think the cardinal rule of fishing is to not have any expectations and wait patiently for those suckers to bite! Maybe the waiting won't be as bad with a damn good cigar. Does anyone know if the smoke scares the fishes away? -Haz-
Mel Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 What good ole southern boy ain't a fisherman? I love to fish all types of tackle but the fly is the tops for me. Did my first trip tp Alaska this year. If I quit buying so many cigars I could get my new boat sooner.
GoatLocker Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 First fish on my new boat, about 30 mi south of San Diego.
Colt45 Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 Nothing like fresh mahi (or dorado in your neck of the woods)! Do you get into the yellowfin and albacore as well?
El Presidente Posted October 28, 2005 Author Posted October 28, 2005 Sensational Fish! Looking forward to a session on your boat :-P
tmos Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 Walleye and Crappie for me. Never been saltwater fishing.

Had sailfish, Dorado and Roosters in Costa Rica. Pike, Walleye and Trout in Canada. Bass, Salmon and just about anything that swims here in the Midwest. Never been to Australia though, heard those Baramundi(Sp?) are cool and don't even get me started on the GBR!
