The government's AIN news agency said officials were evacuating some 190,000 people from low-lying parts of tobacco-rich Pinar del Rio province on the western tip of Cuba's main island. AIN reported that 50,000 already had been evacuated further east.

Not sure how accurate this info is, but I heard that there was not a lot of damage, a few blown over trees, downed power lines but no huge damage that could have happened in Cuba.

New Orleans is a different matter. This storm could hit harder than Katrina did 3 years ago as a major Cat 4 to Cat 5. Certainly hope those in its path heed the warnings and evacuate.

Ufff, now i´m connected after the Hurricane.

Man we were battered hard. Thanks for all your feelings of hope and care. Lisa, Tampa, Prez, Ken, Al, Kjell, Grasso, Cohiba...etc

Still alive and kicking! Really concerned about the Louisiana people at this time.

As of today inn Havana the damages were not so serious but it was scary. MAny trees came down in the city and all the services were shut down except for radio and telephones. No gas, No power, No water.

As we are used to this kind of events, My beloved Ingrid and Me, started the Saturday preparing all the things to be duly covered and safe. When everything was done, we opened the Tennessee Whisky bottle PaPa Van Winkle´s and started to down it as the wind went blowing harder. We have 2 Siglo VIs ready, all the batteries for the radio were charged,, candlelights, a pack of cards (yes, we were playing poker and Brisca Española) we took some pictures a nd a samll video of the weather I wish I could upload here.

Here´s a quick report:

We were impacted at Cat 4 in South Pinar 6:oo pm Saturday after devastating Isle of Youth, South of Cuba.

Sustained Winds: 190-230 km/h

Gustings: 290-330 km/h In Paso Real de San Diego, the record was set in 340 km/h as per read in the wind digital read out before breaking itself. Looking at the Tv reports from Pinar is depressing. Houses seemed to be demolish with a big ball of steel. When asked to the old ones, they said that they don´t recall having experienced anything like that in 60 years. Man, that was serious.

Heavy rains reported in a few locations, winds caused more damages.

Buildings damaged: Still under investigation

Total:

86 000 houses down.

40 000 slighty damaged

Less than 50 people hurt or injured.

No deaths. You would not believe the Water tanks flying and huge TV antennas bending every 5 minutes.

Gotta go now, thanks for all your support and speak to all of you soon.

Best

Holy cow, Jose! I'm happy to hear you all weathered that storm without loss of life. Still, the devastation you describe...it hurts to hear it.

I wonder how resilient the Vegas are? Here is a map showing the last 24 hours. It shows max force winds of 80mph

If any of you live in or near the Gulf Coast and are reading this thread from your home, Turn off the computer and get the hell out of town! This is not going to be pretty and I believe much stronger than Katrina.
