haha, that fish is enormous though, i think it was cos the presenters were from NZ that they didn't land it, not the fact that the shark hit it. :-P

Yep, that's who I'm diving with. You really get your moneys worth too: 45 minute dive and 23 hour paddle thrown in for free. Bargain!:-D

it is one of the real problems of marlin fishing. sharks very often get the fish on the way in (and who amongst us is not thinking of 'the old man and the sea' at the moment?) but even more of a problem is that they exhaust themselves so badly in the fight that they are easy prey for sharks when (if?) released. i've been told that there is a similar problem with bones exhausting themselves and being easy targets for barracudas etc, to the extent that estmates have only around 50% of caught and released fish surviving and less for marlin.

i find it a little more difficult to accept with the bones as they seem to take some time to recover while still near the boat and then bolt but i gather that the stats of catching tagged marlin are so small that it seems very likely.

last time i was on the reef i was at lizard island which was once the absolute mecca for giant black marlin. still is but the entire thing has been toned down hugely. fishermen are expected only to bring a marlin in if they genuinely believe it a record. the weigh station has been moved out of sight of tourists as photos of huge marlin hanging by hooks on jetties don't help the sport. lizard was a fave of lee marvin and is a billiant place though you need big bucks to spend much time there (i was on a 'working' trip sponsored by bollinger and jaboulet).

Yep, I think if the Marlin wasn't hooked-up, he would whupped that shark. We caught a big Blue last week here off Charleston, much smaller that the Black but still a rush.;-)
