northo Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I have had a few of these in the past, beautiful looking sticks but pricey. This one was no different. A good looking cigar; Light for an EL, with a single vein and a thick wrapper, sticky with oils. Little aroma at cold. The initially perfect draw was present all the way through, and translated into a sharp burn, and no re-lights. Remained medium bodied throughout 1st 1/2 Lots of typical EL flavour coming from the wrapper, coffe and sweet chocolate but little of the normal spice/pepper. Pleasant enough, but I'm not absolutely crazy for this profile, and a good proportion of ELs seem to have it. 2nd 1/2 Bit by bit other flavours began to dribble through. Honey and cream came forward, followed by cedar and grass. These built up pushing the cocoa and coffee back into a perfect balance. Going into the last third, this began to taste exactly how it should: like an esplendido on steroids, gone over to the dark side. Quite, quite brilliant. Overall This cigar was raging by the end. Very very good. If more age can even the flavour profile up in the first half, then the sky's the limit. For now though 84 ex 100. (this is the first review I've put up on FOH, so i'll just say that my scores come out a bit lower than most peoples. 84 is a high score for me. Almost the best I've had this year)
shrink Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I appreciate the review, northo. I haven't had one of these in quite a few months. I tried a couple just to confirm that they are extremely good, and have the potential to become legendary. I would venture to say that this is the best young Cohiba I've ever smoked.
kyee Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 These tasted great even when very fresh. I'm hoping they will mature into some stellar smokes down the road.
Ken Gargett Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 » » (this is the first review I've put up on FOH, so i'll just say that my » scores come out a bit lower than most peoples. 84 is a high score for me. » Almost the best I've had this year) just shows how subjective scoring is. for me, 84 sounds as though it is one step away from garden mulch. but i also loved this smoke.
smokum Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Northo I'm thinking a 93 scored cigar from you may cause blindness !!:-D
El Presidente Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 I am with Ken on this one. I believe they will turn into something special as they have great complexity right now but with enough essential mongrel in the blend to go the mid to long term.
