Lanthor Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Per Rob's request (well I just happen to smoke this tonight and read that Prez wanted a review on this cigar). Disclaimer: I suck at this. Didn't take any pictures, sorry it was to dark out. Very dark wrapper, smooth and sturdy. Smelled great, clipped it and the draw was a little firm but nothing to take a tool to or put back into the dry box. Prelight taste was a nice, sweet tobacco flavor. First inch was fairly strong, suprisenly so. I have read that these are a milder version of the Monti #2. I would say flavor wise yes, not as complex, but fairly strong throught the nose, a nice tingle. Second inch mellowed and I had to straighted the burn a few times. Got a very rich tobacco/leather taste, not subtle at all. Into the middle it picked up a little hint of sweetness, lost some strenght and really struggled again on the complexity. I don't think this is a bad thing really. Tasted a lot like a Monti #2, but not in a way that makes you look at the cigar and think "wow, so many different things going on here" like I tend to do with a Monti. I would compare it to your favorite mid level ale that never dissapoints. Not going to knock you off your feet, but steady and enjoyable througout. Last third picked up some strength again, little more leather than earth, and maintained a rich overtone. Didn't get bitter and justified taking it down to the last inch before tossing. Overall: Had to prime it with a few short puffs throughout due to the tighter draw, but this didn't affect the flavor. A nice "I don't want to think about flavors and nuances" type cigar, but not a yardgar by any means. This is out of 10: Draw: 6 Construction: 8 Burn: 7 Body: 7 Flavor: 8 Value: 9 Total: 7.5 My impression is that this is an affordable #2 that would make a good 'go to torpedo' for those days when you want a thicker type cigar with plenty of smoke, but are just not in the mood to spend energy and brain power picking out flavors and nuances. Cheers, Mike
SmokinAl Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 » Disclaimer: I suck at this. Twaddle! Nice job Mike and I think you nailed this. Cheers, Al.
El Presidente Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Excellent review Mike and don't make it your last ;-) You will find the dip 2 will mellow in the next `18 months. The rough edges will smooth out and some nice distinctive sweet and sour plays will begin to show. When it is ready it will show you how different to a Monte 2 it really is. Worth the wait ;-)
jsummers157 Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Very nice review! Reminds me of a few singles I had from a late 06 box. Showed signs but left me wanting more. Have been looking to try some older ones. Good job!
smokum Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 I like your scoring method. I may try that. Great review
shrink Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 » Disclaimer: I suck at this. Mike, don't apologize. That's the only way anyone can get smoke out of a cigar! Thanks for the review. These are good cigars, but need time.
