BlackFriar Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 This may seem like a stupid question but do any of you have any tricks to removing cigar bands without ruining them? I just don't seem to have much luck. I like to smoke cigars down to the nub, and some of the bands are so tight that I fear damaging the cigar wrapper. Needless to say the cigar band is trashed at that point. Any advice? Chris
ArloGut Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 Have you tried a knife or razor blade to get em started?
Boston Mike Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 I have better luck taking them off before I light up. Sometimes you can breathe on them with hot air and it seems to loosen em up a little. FWIW if you age them really well the bands just slide off. :-D
jaylax5 Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 Chris...after the cigar is into the 2nd third, the heat from smoking it will help you get the band off...just lick your pointer finger and thumb and place them on the band (this will give you a little grip or stick)...twist very slowly and lightly and it should start to move, then rotate the band downward until off the end. That's how I get mine to come off...hopefully it works for you.
BlackFriar Posted May 25, 2008 Author Posted May 25, 2008 » Have you tried a knife or razor blade to get em started? Yeah but much of the time the glue holds so well I end up cutting into the paper, once that starts forget it. I've even tried breathing on the band once I get a corner up to see if the mositure in my breath will get the glue to release a bit.

If you want the band to open up, just fire up the tea kettle and let the steam go to work on the glue...this is best AFTER the band is already off the cigar...:-D

jaylax5 Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 » Thanks Jay, you answered the second part of my problem on how to » straighten out the bands if I manage to slip them off the cigar Chris...my technique should work from the 1st post I made...try it out. Once the cigar is warm, the band is easy to slide off.

The band slid off fairly easily after smoking 2/3. Fired up the tea kettle and the glue released. The band is a bit wet (held it a little too close to the spout) but it should be fine after it dries and I press is in a book to straighten out. Thanks. Chris

I wish I had the work ethic to do that after each and every smoke...instead I have a box full of bands. Someday I will do a little project.
smokum Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 I actually iron them after I get them off...and let my daughter do the artwork on the humi !!!
smokum Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 String them and use them as garland around a Christmas tree !!!:-D
Fatcigar Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 » String them and use them as garland around a Christmas tree !!!:-D Not a bad idea...:-D Influenced by a stogie buddy who does the same. Now have an inventory to check against suspected sticks !!
Jay Hemingway Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 hey hamilton loving that cigar band pile-up! :-D i save all of mine to, just some lovin care and form and there off intact. i have an entire avo 22 canister packed to the brim and i am now moving on to the second one.

havanaclub7 Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 That doesn't impress me much. With the advent of HSA adding more and more bands to a single cigar, Fat might have only smoked 10 cigars to pile up that many bands! :-P Just kidding! Very impressive! What are you going to do with them all?
