Leftridge Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 I started out this lovely weekend with grandiose plans of relaxing on the porch for hours at a time while indulging in the only two types of Cohiba in my humi at the moment - the Siglo VI and the 2006 LE Piramides. Well, as should be expected I was side tracked with "family duties" and found myself finally sitting down Sunday evening pondering how my original plans had flown out the window and I had not had time to review either cigar. As I sat in reflection looking out across the freshly clipped grass, newly landscaped trees, and reveling in what was the unique beauty of a Texas sunset I decided it was not too late.. I grabbed a beautiful 2006 LE Piramide from the humi. Being hit instantly with second thoughts about smoking one of three that I received about 5 months ago, I battled through knowing this was for the good of all FOH. :-) _________________________________________________ First impressions are like any well made Cuban I have had to date - a flawless diamond...Every seam in brilliant alignment. Nice colorado colored wrapper and the lighter of the three available. I put the side to my nose and inhale deeply, straining to understand the aroma. I put the bunch to my nose and had my first epiphany with a Cohiba.. Alfalfa... The smell which jogs me back to childhood on the farm stacking fresh cut hay. It is a wonderful smell with depth and weight and I enjoy it for a few moments wondering what will change when it lights up. I have the intuitive feeling that this may be a journey. I toast the foot black, but not lit. Clip the cap and give it a pull. Perfect and smooth with the least bit of tension. I fire it up and begin to draw. First impressions are that I'm smoking a lower end of medium bodied cigar. The smoke is just taking off and I can tell already that it is going to be a smooth traveler (the suspension of a cadillac comes to mind). I also realize I taste the exact smell I had only recently identified...hay...Refined...Highend sweet grass. It is WONDEROUS and MESMIRIZING...No doubt enhanced by my recollections.. As the smoke takes root it also takes depth in flavor. It is becoming more medium bodied with each pull but maintaining its smooth classiness. I am reminded of listening to jazz at a bar in Austin. The music and atmoshere, sophisticated, touching the soul. It doesn’t seem to be developing into a truly complex cigar but rather consistent with a core of light tobacco mixed with hay. Into the second half, the enjoyment of distant memories fade as the smoke twists into a new dimension of rich - yet mellow - tobacco, spice and maybe chocolate covered coffee bean - but again, not intricate. Yet, in some way this smoke is touching my core with its profundity. The noticeable absence of lingering flavor on the palate is intriguing. Starting fresh with each puff... Maintaining its depth smoothness into the final stretch. The final third provides a small change of pace with an ever so slight hint of black pepper and spice. As if alluding to a spectacular finally the crescendo never arrives. I'm reminded of the girl who was always consistent at never giving in but never failed to lure and captivate. This cigar has been a contemplative spiritual jaunt! Rounding home base I recall the question posed a few weeks ago.. Is it the cigar that makes the moment or the moment that makes the cigar? Today the CIGAR made the moment. AMAZING! 95/100
Colt45 Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Another great Cohiba review - well done To date, I've tried one from a box, and seem to be in the minority of feeling these are lightyears from ready.

smokum Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Excellent review. Nothing like a great cigar after a long day.
El Presidente Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 Excellent review Lefty of a cigar which I think will be an all time classic. I only have one caveat with this cigar in that come 2010 will it jump another gear or mellow off. This is one to assess again in 2010 and to decide whether to consume at its peak or to enjoy periodically to see where it goes.

Leftridge Posted May 6, 2008 Author Posted May 6, 2008 Your review of this cigar from Nov 2006 is such an interesting contrast to what I experienced. http://www.friendsofhabanos.com/board_entr...id=40048#p40048 Mine: mellow, smooth, medium bodied, refined Yours: Rich, dark, dank, complex I wonder how much the wrapper has to do with that smoke? Yours in clearly much darker and oily than my lighter colored wrapper. Any thoughts? Wondering if I missed something with my newly developing palate for just simply a different smoke...
El Presidente Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 » Talking about that, where do you see the peak of the LE 2001? I wasn't a fan Guillaume. Don't get me wrong, shortbread in loads and a very good cigar but lacking a full range of flavours to make it a great. I haven't had one in two years so may need to retry.

No doubt a great influence ( I am on the side of 20-30% wrapper influence in cigars...others disagree). I wil be trying another this week so will follow up with a review.

I have had 3 and to me they are phenominal. Absolutely superb.
